- Flights are cheaper. Non-US travel in general is cheaper.

- Borrowing costs are lower. (May be temporary, though.)

- Has made me pay closer attention to my portfolio, which had a large cash position due to sheer neglect. As a result, I am up about 10% in one quarter and about 5% YOY.

- Shorter line-ups at certain stores, and better service in general.

Cheap gas, less traffic, cheap goods, I'm lovin it right now. It also made my separation from my ex cheaper.....less equity in the house!

I've taken a pretty hefty paycut, but I still have loads of disposable income and all kinds of time on my hands now. I'm actually quite enjoying this!!

What about services? Has anyone had and contractors, renovations, painters doing any work that suddenly seemed cheaper?

Like I said - I'm going to be in the market for a new furnace/water tank, maybe get some renos done. How long would be a good time to wait, move now, wail till the summer, xmas next year, etc.

the most pronounced thing I've noticed other than gas being cheaper is waitresses are a lot less b*tchy / a lot more friendly when I'm eating out nowadays.

Life is good when your business is increasing when everything else is in recession. Sorry, don't mean to be a ghoul. Anybody with any sort of money - this is probably the opportunity of a lifetime to set yourself up, so whatever you do don't waste your cash on a truck.

The only beneift is that instead of spending money, I now hoard my cash. Before this nonsense I had 2 months of living expenses saved (mortgage, food, etc) now I have 6 months.

Before I was going to take that extra 4 months of savings and buy a crossover or small SUV, now I am just saving it as my 2002 car is just fine - although the trunk space blows.

Global had a news segment yesterday about the savings that could be had combining the Federal Government's renovation credit with the Alberta Government's energy savings grant. I think Global streams their newscast so you might be able to find the segment on their website.

refiners cut production of gasoline, so oil inventories are building up and gas is dropping. I know, worst of both worlds...

As a geologist I've always found that the best time to make money was not at the top or the bottom of the cycles, but somewhere in between. Lower land prices, drilling costs, ability to farmin, etc. are some of the reasons.

I have found that in spite of the present absence of risk capital, there is always money available to drill good plays.

Investments are usually made on the basis of future commodity price projections, and in the long run I believe the price of oil and gas will be significantly higher.

Yup, that's why I'm looking, also - CMHC and GE will give you a reduction in your mortgage insurance premiums if you do similar reno's/effeciency stuff.
