Blackberry Curve 8900
http://gizmodo.com/5071533/blackberr...s-the-original
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
It seems pretty good to me. I was leaning toward the Curve anyways and this seems to be quite an improvement, plus it has wi-fi.

I had a chance to fiddle around with my friend's 8900. Everything about that phone is just about perfect, except they decided to leave out the 3G, which for me is a deal breaker. I hope they come out of a 9xxx version of this phone in the future that is equipped with 3G. Until then, I'll stick with the bulkier Bold.
If 3G doesn't matter to you, this phone is better than or equal to the Bold in every aspect.

Really, I like the look of the Bold better, I just wish Telus had it. I'm thinking of upgrading to the the 8930 when Telus gets it in a month or two. I'm assuming it will be CDMA- EVDO at that point since the old one was, but I really prefer the keys on the Bold. If they made a CDMA version for Telus I'd jump on it, or if Telus would hurry up with implementing HSPA.

CDMA?
I think the bold is a little big for me as it is just a personal device, I prefer the slimmer curve but want the real keyboard.

Edited, I meant EVDO. All Telus phones are CDMA right now (as opposed to GSM) but EVDO is 3G.

I've had this phone for almost 2 months and absolutely love it. I don't have data as I just need it for email so a lack of 3G wasn't an issue. This phone is beautiful, has a good camera and is a perfect size. For me the bold is to bulky, and in my mind the 8900 is better in ever way besides 3G.

I have had mine for about 6 weeks. 3G isn't a factor for me. The selling point was that it had UMA, now when I go visit my parents where Rogers has no service, I can connect to their WiFi. I had an older Curve before. The bigger processor and the higher resolution screen is great. The Bold is just too bulky and it doesn't have UMA.

Bold (Niagra) will be coming out a couple months for Telus, after the new CDMA Curve.

I'm looking to get a 8900 in the next couple weeks. Bold has a better processor and 3G but I will be using it mostly for e-mail/maps/GPS and limited browsing so the slower speeds won't be that big of a deal for me.
I have also played with the bold a bit and I don't really like the keyboard.. it feels kind of mushy. I think I would like the keys seperated a bit. The screen is smaller on the 8900 (slightly) but it has a better resolution.

Are you saying EVDO is the same as 3G? For some reason I thought 3G was faster or the next fastest thing. I was looking forward to faster internet speed on the BB. But if EVDO is the fastest thing? I guess I'll be waiting a while longer.

Wow, you've opened up a can of worms with that one... You might get a Windows/Mac type debate or a Bell/Shaw debate going with that.
My understanding is that EVDO is 3G. It has been around a little bit longer than HSPA, and on average is currently a little bit faster than HSPA. Telus just didn't use the '3G network' as a marketing ploy the way that other carriers did even though it is a 3g network. However, EVDO is at the end of it's development cycle from the looks of things and HSPA has more potential for improvement than EVDO. EVDO has been great, but will now be phased out. Many people argue that EVDO is inferior, but all of the objective data I've seen suggest that it is slightly better in real-world terms than the current HSPA systems that are actually up and running. The next thing is actually 4G. That is why Telus/Bell are switching from a CDMA network to a GSM. Although there is an evolutionary path for EVDO to become a 4G system, there is far more funding going into developing a 4G GSM system and Telus/Bell have decided to try and improve their ability to compete and their phone lineups by moving to the more popular GSM standard for the 4G future
3G is a misleading term. It simply means third generation of a particular technology. EVDO is the third generation of CDMA based technology while HSPA is 3G of the GSM side, bit it doesn't actually mean anything specific about performance. (BTW, if you look this up, fanboys on both sides often refer to the other side as 2.5G to highlight deficiencies.
I'll be happy with either an HSPA Bold from Telus or a EVDO Bold from Telus depending on what is offered. I just assume it will be EVDO, because I don't think Telus has 'upgraded' it's system to HSPA yet.
My Blackberry Pearl says Qualcomm 3G CDMA on the back, so the manufacturer certainly considers EVDO to be 3G at any rate.
