You old romantic you. I don't think there's a girl alive who wouldn't prefer raw fish and some fermented rice over, say, a bouquet of roses or a polished mineral.
If you want to let her know you like her, but not a lot, have you considered buying her carnations?

I'm not interested in anything remotely serious, just keeping her around for, ahem, fun time. That's been made painfully obvious to her already. I guess that for once I'm trying to avoid being a complete ass, as she's a young nice med school student that hasn't been jaded to the world yet.
Also, your sig cracks me up. I always read it at first as "Blame it on ResAlien"

In that case, buy her a nurse's outfit and a bouquet of carnations. That's two backhanded compliments for the price of... well... assuming you buy them separately... two.
And I guess the sig is anagrammatic. Although really, I suspect it may be the Germans' fault after all.

Anyone know where I can get some fairly inexpensive horseback riding lessons and or riding time? She loves the big dumb animals and I don't know anyone who owns one.

If you don't want to get serious, why even celebrate Valentine's Day at all? You're not obligated to reciprocate on Valentine's Day because she got your a birthday present. A birthday is a real holiday and Valentines Day isn't. (IMO, not bashing the holiday)
