I think it will do well. The slam dunk lost its appeal after the stars stopped doing it.

And HORSE was the inspiration for the old McDonalds commercial between Jordan and Bird ("Off the scoreboard, nothin but net"), so this could be good.

You have to know that some of these guys were approached about playing horse and they totally thought whores, and were all in favour of that.

I think the NBA is like Russia before the revolution. No middle class. You have wonderfully intelligent people or woefully witless intellectual peons, and no one is just average.

Oh great, you just opened the race box

Upon seeing that, I think you may have a point.

But I am still curious nonetheless.

Wow this is highly offensive.

Not only that but most NBA players complete their college degrees while playing the NBA.

I thought that would get a rise. Just jokes, folks. Take it with a grain of salt. If you knew me personally, you'd know I'm far from a racist.

It has more to do with the level of education of the players than race, and I include white players in that as well. I HIGHLY DOUBT that most players complete their college degrees while in the NBA, I would buy 'some', not 'most'. And many of these players with 'college degrees' can barely speak English which makes me think their degrees were largely a gift rather than hardwork. You can not possibly say that a league with a greater degree of college graduates has a greater IQ when we all know that many of the U.S. college degrees for athletes are a joke. I find Shaq, Nash, Bryant & LeBron very intelligent, and Bryant never even got a degree (straight out of high school), was LeBron right out of high school too?

I would say that (on average) NHL and MLB players are well spoken and seem better educated by comparison, followed by NFL & CFL then NBA. No idea why, no real correlation I can see, but it is what it is. Maybe it has to do with a feeling of entitlement (only 12 guys on a bball team, much more in the other sports)? Maybe colleges need to do even more dubious things to keep top basketball players than football/baseball/hockey players...No idea.

Just my opinion based on my observations.

What the whole point of completing high school then if these players can barely speak English?

Completing high school means you can go to college, College means you have a better chance of getting drafted, Getting drafted means $$$.

And you know that high school's are not immune from this. There are players getting a free pass at the high school level because of they are good in sports.

It is a systemic problem, more prevalent in the States than in Canada, where some teachers, coaches, and institutions are enabling some uneducated lads to skate through.

Ebonics does not equal unintelligence. P. Diddy, Master P, and several other intelligent businessmen speak ebonics. It's a matter of upbringing and not equal to capability.

I agree. I have no doubt that P.Diddy and Master P are intelligent men. They've seemed so in everything I've seen them in. (Master P, however, is a terrible ballroom dancer). Of course, I keep focusing on intelligence (regardless of race). You are the one who keeps focusing on race. Funny that.

If anything, I am stereotyping by sport (not race), but even then I have qualified everything. The original point I made wasn't that basketball players were stupid, but rather that the gulf between the intelligent players and unintelligent players seems more pronounced in basketball. Shaq makes Chris Kaman look like the town fool, IMO.

I have no statistics to back it up, I haven't seen interviews of every player in major sport to draw a solid conclusion. Just my observation from what I HAVE seen. If I'm wrong...well, okay.

Funny I never once brought up race but was speaking about ebonics, because your earlier post seem to suggest it.

I would say that NFL players are amongst the smartest. It helps that they are the only ones required to take an intelligence test and we get to know the results. And they score the same as the average population. This is probably true of all the other major sports. Since there is no direct correlation with being an elite athlete and intelligence, one should be able to conclude that athletes are distributed along an IQ curve the same as the average population.

I hate the dunk competition.

It is probably the least important basketball skill and it is lifted up on a pedestal and made the supreme event of the weekend.

At least with this, the players will actually have to do something that is useful in a game.

Still won't watch.

Cool idea, and so simple. Weird it hasn't been thought of before!

Well there goes my excuse for not being very athletic.

You sure they're not inversely proportional?

The Slam dunk was fun when it was marquee players involved.

When players like Jordon or Dominique Wilkins played, people would buy tickets just to see them play. And when All-Star weekend came along, to see them all performing together in one venue was worth watching.

But as soon as these stars started turning down the dunk competition, it lost a lot if its luster. Most, if not all NBA players can dunk, and there are a lot of relative unknowns who can do amazing things in this format, but the non-NBA public just aren't all that interested in seeing Fred Jones or Harold Miner (as talented as they are).
