Go to my PC
For many years I had 3 computers on the go and have finally got that down to 2.
Now I am considering going to one and just using my laptop to access the desktop remotely.
I have done a bit of research and am leaning towards "Go to my PC". Does anyone use this? Or do you use another program?

Ahh ok that makes sense. Windows XP Home doesn't have remote desktop. You can try RealVNC, ive played around with it and it seems to work pretty well.
You can install the free edition here:

Symantec's PC Anywhere.
...and Remote Desktop (RDC) is Windows XP Pro. If you have XP Home, you're outta luck (which would be a shame, because RDC is very nice, very simple and more than enough to do what you need to do).

Actually, RDC is on Windows Home
This software package can also be found on the Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition product CDs and can be installed on any supported Windows platform. To install from the CD, insert the disc into the target machine's CD-ROM drive, select Perform Additional Tasks, and then click Install Remote Desktop Connection.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...DCLIENTDL.mspx
And, if you are feeling really nerdy and have 2 monitors ... go "Start -Run - mstsc /span" ... BAM.. RDC with dual monitors.

Hhmm... it also says this though....
When run, this software allows older Windows platforms to remotely connect to a computer running Windows XP Professional with Remote Desktop enabled.
I have Windows XP Home on both my desktop and laptop...
Think I might be SOL on the free programs; especially since security is an issue as my intended use is for work related activity.

I used GoToMyPC for a couple of months and found that it was okay. I was using it to help out some fresh out of school junior guys with some 3D modelling. I did use it a couple times from my than archaic home computer to access my work machine to do some work. I did find that I can't work as fast through the go to my PC application as I could being dircectly at my computer. But back in the days when I had work to do, it was a very valuable tool for me to see antoher persons computer in a drafting program and be able to direct them on how to act in certain situations.

I had a VNC app on my iphone that worked awesome and it was free ... then I changed my router and I cannot for the life of me get it to work anymore. I've been thinking about buying the logmein app but it's $30. Logmein is really good though.

RDC or RealVNC should both work. I use RDC at work (IT) and RealVNC at home, or to remote my home computers from work.
It does take some jigging of your router etc. The plus for gotomypc is that its easy. If you are comfortable changing the settings on your Router, than VNC will be the better and cheaper option IMO.
Also, I believe gotomypc requires your to allow the connection, so for you to remote your desktop, you would have to ok it from the desktop.

Of all the gotomypc sessions I have been involved with, I have always had to log into their session or ok it on my end.
Unless they have a version for remoting that I am unaware of. I checked gotomypc pricing a while ago for my home biz and it was crazy so I didnt bother looking at the rest of the site. Its developed by the citirix guys so they definately know what they are doing.

I am not a techie geek by any means.... but my understanding of it is that I install the program on the main computer (ie: office) and then log in at gotomypc's website from my laptop and can access the other computer.
The other computer simply needs to be on and connected to the web.... no one needs to be there to accept the connection....or am I mistaken?

I am looking at the single user version which is $20.00 per month. Which for me is ok to rid myself of this headache of having multiple copies of the same files on two computers.

RealVNC is 30US - one time cost.
I am by no means an expert on gtmc but when I looked at it, the advantage was that there is no rejigging the router settings, as it tunnels in on Port 80 (always open HTTP). So yes, you can log into any computer on the web (as it says in its commercials) but one would assume that the computer you are logging into has to accept the connection, else what stops me from remoting random shaw IP addresses.
I prefer real VNC, but I have no problem setting static IP on my home computers, and port forwarding on my router and setting exceptions in my firewall.
Its totally posible that gtmc has some sort of remote credential service for remoting computers without the users conscent, if so great. Just make sure it does you want it to do as I have heard from some that they rival video professor in the difficulty in cancelling the service.
Make sure you do your dudilligence before making the purchase is all I am saying.

logmein seems like it works really well. I was wondering if anyone used this on a mac before? It would be kinda cool to use the iSight camera and view my room from my office to keep an eye on my dog (puppy).
