Today's the day the music died
50 years ago today.

Today would be a good day to revisit these old songs that I haven't listened to for a long time.

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

After seeing that poster, I think that one of my first questions to God (when I see Him) will be: Why wouldn't you take Dion (without the Belmonts) instead of Buddy Holly? Seems like a more logical choice to me, he could've left the best one behind for us to enjoy awhile longer.
Paul McCartney claimed that the first 40 songs the Beatles wrote were all heavily influenced by Buddy Holly.

Actually, I heard Don MacLean once say that he never said that the song was about Buddy Holly, people just inferred/guessed that it was. And then when asked if it was, he just said, "Next question."

I wonder what todays equivalent would be? Like, what pop stars would all have to die together in a fiery crash for it to carry the same magnitude?

It's really hard to come up with any pop-star who one might think would have any influence 50 years from now.

Goddamn, even today this is still a monumental tradgedy.
From personal experinece though, March 11th, 2000 was the day the music died.
I'm such a goddamn music nerd I wore a black armband to school that day.
What happened that day you wonder?
March 11th, 2000. The day Madonna releases a cover of Don McLean's American Pie.
*sad*

Lennon's biggest influence was Holly for sure. He idolized him greatly.
One of the saddest things about this tragedy was an unfortunate use of words by Waylon Jennings:
Richardson had developed a case of the flu during the tour and asked one of Holly's bandmates, Waylon Jennings, for his seat on the plane; Jennings agreed to give up the seat. When Holly learned that Jennings wasn't going to fly, he said, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." Jennings responded, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes." This exchange of words, though made in jest at the time, haunted Jennings for the rest of his life.

Holly was a true legend in his short career.
I read Waylon's book and he said he couldn't even think of playing music for a couple of years after Holly's death. Holly kind of showed Waylon the ins and outs of the music industry and Waylon looked up to him as a big brother. Luckily Waylon took what he learned from Buddy and carved quite a ground breaking career of his own.

And Motown was just ripping off the Delta Blues. Musical evolution is inevitable.

Put my monumental music tragedy down as December 22, 2002. The day Joe Strummer, a big Buddy Holly fan, died of a heart attack. Huge generational loss to rock and roll.
