when i said first one i didnt mean to imply it was the first version. merely that it was a port of civ1. back then i was in junior high and knew nothing of computers! i didnt get my own PC till 99 and my first purchase was civ2 multiplayer gold edition! before that i always had to play the pc version on friends machines.

Here's how I grew up with the Civ franchise

Civ I
Civ II
Civ II: Test of Time
Civ: Call to Power
Call to Power II
Civ III
Civ III: Play the World
Civ III: Conquests
Civ IV
Civ IV: Warlords
Civ IV: Beyond the Sword

I think i've spent more hours playing Civ than anything else in my life.

I got hooked because Civ I came with my new 486 in the early 90's. Some other game was on the disc as well called Mantis, but that game freaked the hell out of me so I never played it. In the beginning intro a giant mantis stabbed some news reporter through the chest.

No matter what the scenario was, I found every game of AOE to be the same. You do the same things over and over.

Alpha Centauri was great fun, as was the very old Colonization which I believe was Sid Meiers first game he made.

Oooh they made a remake of it 2008:

I never played Alpha Centauri for some reason and that always bugged me. I downloaded it a couple years ago and played a bit, but it's not the same.

Don't get AoE.

Get StarCraft: Brood War and play that hard if you want to play a RTS that is extremely competetive.

There's a reason a 1998 game is still played to death world wide. Just have to look past the graphics.

The Total War series is really good as well. The best fight scenes if you have a good video card.

No kidding. There is still 50,000 people online at any given time on battle.net for an 11 year old game. Simply amazing.

As far as the original question, I've always preferred Civilization. Partly because I was introduced to it first, and partly because I prefer turn based games over RTS.

Absolutely.

Rome: Total War was great, and I believe the engine was used to recreate some historical battles for a tv series.

Edit: From Wiki:
Quote:
The 3D real-time action is uniquely different than most standard RTS games in that tactical maneuvering is critical to success whereas most RTS games take no account for the direction units are facing, flanking movements, breaking of lines, etc. The high-quality 3D graphics engine is able to render over thirty thousand men on a single battlefield. The strategic and tactical modes integrate such that the landscape for the battles is the same as seen on that particular spot on the strategic map where the armies meet.

Anybody remember or play Populous? (I or II)

Not really in the same league in terms of civilization building or anything. But man I loved being able to blow up the other guy's stuff with volcanoes, earthquakes and tornadoes. Or causing plagues. No multiplater' but it was one of my faves around the time of Civ II.

I had to stop playing Civ II or I might have dropped out of Uni. Skipped III and played IV quite a bit but never got the expansions. Were they worthwhile?

Yes, the Beyond the Sword expansion is really good. It adds enough new gameplay elements and revamps some of the original ones. I wouldnt want to play CivIV without it.

Ive been playing Starcraft/Broodwar since 1996 I think. The game just doesn't seem to get old.

+1 for all the love for Rise of Nations

Take the Civ building aspects of Civilization and put it into a RTS

Best of the Ci, AoE options IMO

I've played a fair amount of AoE but never played any of the Civ series. This thread has me curious though. I was in Future Shop the other day and noticed that they had Civ III for $10. Is it worth picking this up to try or would I be better off going with Civ IV? Also has anyone tried the Civ for PS3? I'm curious if that would be any good. To me these type of games are more suited to a PC.

Thanks.

Populous had mltiplayer - I can distinctly remember playing against friends over a 2400 baud modem. In fact, Populous was unique in that Amiga users could play with PC users. Imagine a PS3 playing an Xbox, it would be unheard of these days.

PS3 Civ is like a much faster paced Civ3. I like it sometimes simlpy because I know I will be able to get a full game in between the kids going to bed and me going to bed.
