No, i think it just takes longer because banks will end up lending the money so it does go back into the economy, just not as fast as if you were spending it

I thought for personal income taxes, they would at least lower the tax rate on the middle bracket. Raising the excemption benefits all tax payers

Wow $85 billion dollar deficit over the next 6 years. Our total debt will go from $233bil to $294 bil.

Not sure I agree with focusing on the tax cuts for low income earners (not that its a bad thing!). But in reality how much stimulus can it provide?? If we want to stimulate "spending" the middle and high income earners need to be the target of any tax cut. We naturally have more disposable income and would likely spend it a lot more than a low income earner scrapping by.

The tax cuts (assuming I stay employed ) save me a whopping $60/month...or a cup of coffee a day. Just more to put against my mortgage.

And $85BB dollars in deficit!! Jesus H...we'll be paying for this for a long time. Although I think there HAS to be some serious fat built into that so that the Conservatives can look like heroes when we only go $50BB in debt.

I'm surprised your shocked about that number. There were leaks all week that the next two years would result in a combined deficit of $64 billion.

I'm not surprised at all, to add, i don't care who is in power but it pisses me off to no end in canadian politics how the opposing parties always bitch about the things the party in power does. They could come out and say they cured cancer and the ndp's would say how bad that is because cancer drugs sales would go down. Pisses me off, sorry for the language.

Heard him and Ignatieff interviewed yesterday. Layton was asked about Ignatieff's comments that he would take a day to review and digest the budget before commenting on it and it would be foolish to do otherwise and basically replied then that he wouldn't trust the budget. Then went off on a totally unrelated rant about Harper.

Came across as one bitter individal.

Seeing as there is a $750 dollar tax credit for a new home purchase and up to $1350 tax credit for home renovations, do you think I could qualify for both since I'm purchasing a new condo?

For the home renovation tax credit, could I not apply claiming the upgrades?

Well it was during October when the economy was crumbling that Harper and his band were saying that the economy was fundamentally sound and there would be no deficit.

I am kind of on the fence about that. On one hand the argument is "No one could've predicted what was coming" so this excuses them. A lot of brilliant people (economically and financially) didn't see this coming.

On the other hand though, these guys are privy to all of the latest information and resources. When they say that everything is fine, people take notice. Part of me thinks that they have a duty to give an honest assessment and not sugar coat things.

Well... I'd suggest that if you're in the high income bracket, you're probably already buying consumer items as you see fit. A few extra hundred dollars to the person in the highest bracket probably won't change their spending habits much.

If you're a low-middle income earner, an extra hundred dollars here or there may be your whole consumer item budget for that time period... a few extra bucks in their hands is likely to be spent directly in the economy rather than saved or used to pay down debt.

Not in those exact words. I am going by memory here, but I think it was the "The economy is fundamentally strong" comment that has caused them grief. (This is the same comment that John McCain made in the US).

Like I say, I'm not too sure whether they knew more and were sugar coating this for the citizenry or whether they just had no idea. The more I think about it though, someone around them should've realised that this was a big deal!
