Default Ip Man

When Bruce Lee first started out, he learned martial arts from one of the best. His sifu (master) was a man named Ip Man (or Yip Man), who was a practitioner and grand master of the Wing Chun martial art. He was the first to openly teach Wing Chun and brought the martial art to international attention.

Now there is a movie based on this man. It stars Donnie Yen, who in my mind is perfect for this role.

I am utterly amazed and blown away by how awesome this movie is. This isn't a movie only about martial arts, but about a family man who, against all odds, struggled to keep his family together during the japanese occupation of China.

He is a loving husband, a caring father, a good friend, but make no mistake, he is also the original fist of fury.

You'll see where Bruce Lee gets a lot of his ideas from.

Go see it! Try to find it in Chinatown (if you can avoid getting shot).

Reading this post reminds me of the movie "Wing Chun" with Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen. Enjoyed that movie a lot. I'm pretty sure I still have a copy of that one but I think it's one of the ones without subtitles. But heck who needs dialogue when you have all that action and the gorgeous Michelle Yeoh to watch!!!!!!!!!

the film has a bit too much slow-mo type CG in it in a few small points, it feels a bit cheap in that way. Especially the fight against the uncultured northern chinese brute guy. I miss the old guerilla style of HK fight choreography

Yup, I'm eagerly awaiting this one to be on DVD so I can order it off yesasia. I hear this is a two parter, with the second movie to focus on his later life in Hong Kong. I wonder who they'll get to play a young Bruce Lee.

It's too bad Donnie hasn't appeared in more Hollywood films. He's one of the few Chinese actors who actually could speak english fluently all along (instead of the clumsy start with Jet Li, Jackie, etc. as they went through english lessons and their english is still a bit awkward). Donnie went to school in Boston.

And Danny Chan and Jay Chou, etc. etc. as usual HK film rumors go.

All these actors are a bit old, isn't it supposed to be young Bruce Lee?

What's interesting is that there is another Ip Man film in production for a long time with Tony Leung and is supposed to be the more serious one that is more about drama than martial arts and it is competing with this one.

I did hear that too with the rumours with Aaron, but to me that didn't really make sense, since they're all all pretty old (with Jay Chou being the youngest at 28 or so). I wonder how they'll pull that one off.

I did hear about the other Ip Man biopic with Tony Leung. I think drama wise that one will be way better, but honestly, I don't watch Donnie Yen movies for drama anways, so I think I'll enjoy both.

One of the best martial arts movies I've seen in a long time. Brings back memories of movies like the original "Once upon a time in China", "Iron Monkey", and etc. when this genre was extremely popular.

I'm also surprised that Donnie Yen hasnt become a bigger star. His acting is a bit static at times but it isn't any worse than Jet Li's.

My favorite scene is from Once Upon a Time in China II when Jet Li and Donnie Yen squared off at the end. Must have been a 10 minute scene!

His only western roles aside from appearing in Shanghai Noon is from Highlander Endgame and a bit part in Blade II.

Again, it's too bad since he has perfect english being basically raised in Boston.

For like 2 seconds I thought I did something really bad or really good. Then I remembered hearing about this guy from my friends who take Wing Chun...

Donnie Yen vs. Jet Li...

Donnie Yen is killed by a splinter LOL

Donnie was always my favorite, but he always has to lose to Jet (and even Jackie Chan) in every movie they are in together, it's terrible.
