My friends and I were talking before the movie and they were appalled that I never saw any of the Dirty Harry movies..............are they really that good?

I loved Clint Eastwood in it, he should have got an Oscar nom. He was great in it, for many lines and reasons that if I quoted would get me banned.
I thought overall though the movie was good, not great, and not bad either. A decent average movie. The acting outside of Eastwood was cringe worthy at times.

I really, really hope you aren't talking about the Hmong characters in the film. Clint was great, but everyone else in that community production were awful.

Greatest movie villain? I disagree.

I can only comment on the ones I've seen:
Michael Shannon was fantastic in Revolutionary Road, albeit a small part
I Doubt I would ever see or recommend Doubt to anyone. The acting was solid, but not Oscar worthy IMO. The writing was sanctimonious and rather lame (saw the ending coming a mile away).
In Doubt, Viola Davis had such a small role (smaller than Michael Shannon above) that I don't see how it can even be considered. I mean, and Oscar nom for 5 mins screen time?

Sums up my feelings on it perfectly. The actor who played Tao (or whatever his name was) was particularly awful.

Judi Dench won an Oscar for 8 minutes as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love, so I guess there is a precedent for it.

Same here. About 5 minutes in it was like I'd completely forgot it was a movie and that Rourke was an actor. He absolutely nailed the part, almost like nothing I've ever seen.

Heath must win for supporting Actor. His scenes make TDK a much better movie than it actually is, IMO. He is the sole reason why I watch that movie, I can't help but think how awesome the 3rd movie would have been (with him in it), if it hadn't have been for his tragic death.
Also, I haven't seen any of the movies that are nominated. I must just watch crap, like Quantum of Solace.
Pineapple Express > All
Oh yes and Darth Vader rules all.

Anne Hathaway. Can't stand her.
When are they going to give PS Hoffman the lifetime exemption for BSA? The guy is money.

Have you seen Rachel Getting Married?
It's absolutely fantastic.
Great movie.

I'd really like to see Rachel Getting Married. I had something against Anne Hathaway for a while myself but my opinion of her changed when she hosted SNL - she was great! She had fantastic timing, didn't resort to the cue cards as often as many of the show regulars, and pulled off some tricky performances that to me indicate she really knows what she's doing. I had her pegged as a talentless bimbo but she proved me wrong. I have heard good things about her performance in that film.

My thoughts:
It is shocking and ridiculous that Benjamin Button got all of those noms. I think it will win a couple of minor awards but will be shut out of the big ones. I just never was engrossed enough by the movie to accept its premise. It just never worked...
I just got back from seeing The Wrestler and wow it was amazing. I really enjoyed it - it was very well made - I'm a big fan of Darren Aranofsky and although it wasn't necessarily as frantically edited and stylized as Requiem for a Dream it certainly was effective. Mickey Rourke did an amazing job with the character and made the instant connection that Brad Pitt never did.
I am very torn between Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn. Either of them is more than deserving of the nod. If Pitt wins, the Academy Awards should be scrapped altogether. My heart is with Penn. I think that the Academy will go with Rourke though...he personally has a feel good comeback story and Penn has had several nominations and a recent win under his belt.
RE: Gran Torino - Clint Eastwood was really good and held together a movie that had an interesting, yet not particularly creative plot and had very little support from his fellow actors. In fact the acting was almost painful to watch. They seemed to accept any person who was of Hmong/Chinese origin regardless if they had ever acted before. It showed. However, if this were any other year, I think that Eastwood would have earned a nomination.
Very strong year for movies in general. I would have liked to have seen The Dark Knight get nominated for best picture rather than Benjamin Button...I know that action movies rarely get the big nominations but it was clearly the superior film.

I thought Gran Torino was good right after I saw it but the next day I thought it was a load of crap.
So cliched and moronic. Cookie cutter story, bad acting, and really stretched believability.
Definitely one of Eastwood's worst movies.

Wall-E and The Dark Knight got robbed, but the best movies (as judged by a large majority of movie goers) do seem to get robbed every year.
Milk was sleep inducing. My wife owes me one after that.
This going to be the least viewed Oscars show, maybe ever. They are almost already irrelevant to 95%+ of the movie going public that haven't seen or have no desire to see the "big category" nominees.

That's because the large majority of movie goers are morons and would nominate crap like "White Chicks".

Saw Slumdog Millionaire last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend it to anyone, and I think I'm gonna have to go get the soundtrack.
That said, I don't really think it's 'best picture' material. It's a wonderful fantasy of a film, with enough darkness to be palatable for modern tastes, but best picture? I dunno.
To be honest, I haven't seen anything this year that really deserves 'best picture' accolades, but I haven't seen that many movies.
And for all y'all Dark Knight lovers, it's a great movie, but it shouldn't be anywhere near a best picture trophy. As all superhero movies are bound to be, it's a profoundly flawed film.
And for whoever was asking about Return of the King's win. They gave all the trophies to that film to recognize the acheivment that is the whole trilogy.

Not that looks are a good indicator of acting ability, but I find her completely unattractive.
That said, I did like her in The Devil Wears Prada, and that says something because I went into that movie pissed off that I had to watch it. Streep was glorious, as usual.
