Is the Wrestler loosely based on any one person's life? It seems to mirror Jake the snake Roberts life to a tee!

Can someone tell me how Return of the King gets not only nominated for Best Picture, and wins and The Dark Knight isn't even nominated?

I must say Im surprised by the lack of noms for the Dark Knight for two reasons:
1) the score was awesome. Set the tone for the movie perfectly and love the little backround sound that went in and out. Surprised it's not nominated.
2) you would've thought with all the critical acclaim and the history of the academy that they would at least give it a best picture nom just to try and prove theyre not complete stuck ups

To number one, they reasoned that to many composers had a hand in its creation

they took that back though and claimed it to be eligable.

Nomination ballots, Variety says, have not been distributed yet, but when they are The Dark Knight will be an option for Academy members.

I'd probably cast my vote for Milk as Best Picture, although I haven't seen The Reader. I would have liked to see Young @ Heart in the documentary category and Die Falscher (The Counterfeiters) in foreign film. I enjoyed both of those. Someone above mention Vicky Cristina Barcelona which was great as well. Blindness was another great one I would have loved to see on the list, but I understand why it wasn't.

Actually, Die Falscher (The Counterfeiters) won the award for Best Foreign Film at the 2008 Academy Awards.

I haven't seen enough of the films to comment intelligently about who should and shouldn't win, but I'm happy to see In Bruges got at least one nomination. Any movie that can make me like Colin Ferrell has to be Oscar worthy.
Anne Hathaway. Can't stand her.
When are they going to give PS Hoffman the lifetime exemption for BSA? The guy is money.

I thought it was great too....the ending was superb. And only Clint Eastwood can be 80 years old and still badass enough to scare the balls out of you

Incidentally, this is thematically relevant to the film and in fact closely related to a very poignant statement the story makes about the idea of the 'American dream'.
I was NOT an ardent supporter of Eastwood's last both-sides-of-the-camera effort in Million Dollar Baby, but I really like what he achieves here. It isn't perfect and does resort to some rather lame cliches at times, but there are some good laughs mixed in with the drama, and some speculate it could be Clint's swan song (though this is nothing new); given the Academy's history of sentimental and political nominations I am definitely surprised to see Gran Torino shut out.
One thing I don't think I'll ever understand is the double-nominee (ie., categories where a movie gets more than one short-lister). Certainly these films are strong and doubtless (no pun intended) the recognition is warranted, but with a) so many other good movies available to honor and b) the wide swath of interests that are invested in getting recognized via this avenue, ignoring solid work while focusing heavily on multiple facets of one work whose comparable value is debateable at best (given ranging opinions at least) strikes me as very odd.

The Oscars are joke, I stopped caring about them 5 years ago. I don't need some academy to tell me what the best picture of the year (it's Australia, btw). At least Wall-E didn't get nominated, that would've been ridiculous.

not to say it should have....but i personally loved WALL-E. I thought it was amazing how good of a story was told with almost completely no dialogue

Saw Gran Torino last night, what a great film. Good story, great acting............Eastwood is a true man's man
My friends and I were talking before the movie and they were appalled that I never saw any of the Dirty Harry movies..............are they really that good?
