same can be said of David Beckham, combine that with the popularity of soccer worldwide and he is the clear winner.

Of course this all depends if we are talking recognizable like they can be named from a picture or if they are a household name. Because people like the pope and dali lama etc. are very well known but only as names, doubt moroe than a handful here could pick them out of a lineup.

I stick with my original pick of Ronald McDonald, recognizable as both a name and a picture.

Once again, you are looking at it from a North American point of view. Go to Africa, Europe and Asia....and there is no doubt a guy like Beckham is more recognizable.

I have to agree, as much as I hate rolling around on the ground holding my ankle (read soccer), Pele, Beckham et al, would win in a land slide, a friend of mine was travelling in Vietnam and saw Man U shirts on kids playing in the streets......sad but true soccer is popular

As much as i hate the drama in the sport, you gotta admit you have to be a great athlete to play the game. Anyone who doesn't think so, try sprinting around a giant field for an hour and a half. These guys are amazing athletic machines (and yes, sadly, often with a primmadonna complex).

Outside of hockey, boxing, iron-man, most sports don't even come close. It's definitely not one where being a fat-ass is a non-issue (read baseball).

And hey, it's dirt cheap to play. All you need is a roundish object.

quick points, there is no sprint for the full time, I would suggest there are a number of other sports that are as physically challanging if not more so:
  • Rugby: all players are required to have a large aerobic and anaerobic capacity, as well as significant strenght
  • Lacrosse: I would suggest both box and field are challenging
  • Wrestling (olympic or grecco roman): very well conditioned
I could go on, and all of the above are cheap (lacrosse does require eqiupment).

Of course they are not sprinting for 90 minutes, but anyone who's played the game will tell you that, the constant stop/go action of the game can be brutal. The big part of soccer is that fact you have to play hard for a long time....it's a combination of power, endurance and skill. It's like hockey, but without the line changes.

All of the sports you mentioned are tough, and not easy to play, although again, neither Wrestling or Lacrosse go on as long as a soccer match. And doesn't box lacrosse have line changes?

Rugby's a hard game to play, no doubt.

The only one I agree with is Rugby. Those guys are incredibly well conditioned.

I won't argue the flow of a game, but field Lacrosse does not (to the best of my knowledge have subs).

I could argue that Rugby is the hardest team sport to play.

You mean like WWE?

I think this thread is WAAAAYYYY off track

I remember as a kid watching some schmaltzing Dolly Parton and Carol Burnett TV special with my mom. The curtain went up to show the two of them, back to back, behind a white curtain, light in the background casting a silhouette on the curtain. It was OBVIOUS which was which.

So most recognizable "profile" in the world could be Dolly Parton.

It's funny actually, a while ago I was having this conversation with my friends because one of my students didn't know who Arnold Schwarzenegger was. The kid was like 13 and didn't know Arnie. I was shocked.

People in Singapore for example wouldn't know who Michael Jordan is.. they 'might' know Tiger Woods.

The three people known in every corner of the world are...

Ali, Pele, and the Pope.

There's been some studies on the subject, with various levels of credibility. Couldn't find any of the more credible ones, but I seem to remember that in the nineties the top two were Mickey Mouse and Michael Jackson. Jesus is a more complicated character, since even though many theologists/historians consider him to have been "most likely" a real person, the way he is depicted these days varies enough to make his picture unrecognizable over cultural borders.

Pele is up there no question, and Muhammed Ali most likely too.

The current pope hasn't been in business long enough I'd say, although he has a pretty recognizable face.

As of footballers, Zinedine Zidane will propably still be among the most famous for quite a while.

Queen Elizabeths face is calculated to be the most often reproduced face ever (after Jesus, but I already explained why that doesn't really count), so that would most propably also make her one of the most recognized faces. Her face is on millions of pictures, stamps, coins, bills and she is regurarly displayed in the media in every continent, and has been for a very long time.

Britney Spears is also up there for sure.

Dont' forget Michael Schumacher either. Oh, and Carl Lewis.

As another note, yeah sure, just about anybody can play some kind of football (that's one of the reasons it's so popular), but to be one of those guys who make the really big bucks you have to be amazingly talented, practise essentially every waking hour of your life and have unhuman levels of dedication to stay fit and focused enough to beat the hundred million other kids who dream of making it (most of whom live in the slums in some corner of the world, where football is the only way out).

Despite it's problems, it's the best sport in the world. And as to the amount of "diving", it's waa-yy overblown in USA/Canada, mostly because most people don't know what they're talking about. When you're running at full speed, it only really takes very little contact on either foot to make you fall down, simply because when one feet doesn't land where it's supposed to fast enough, down you go. (It's totally different from American football, where you're not allowed to go for the legs.)

The field makes for a very hard landing and there's essentially no protection. Then again you rarely break anything as long as you remember to roll or slide when you land. If you do neither, you'll increase your chance of getting hurt tremendously.

I've been there and tried it; a small knock on one foot and I down I go, rolling on the ground. The parts that took most of the fall hurt like hell and I'm out of wind completely for a few seconds, and a little later adrenaline kicks in, the brain realizes that nothing was broken, I get up, and ten seconds later I don't even remember it. It's just how it works.

Really, you have to play it to understand how it works.
