I might be missing something, but who the heck would recognize Jesus' face? I mean, name recognition, sure...face? Does he have a picture floating around that I don't know of?
I'm not even trying to be an ass, do you guys mean his face in a particular rendition (of which there are probably many)? Because even though I grew up in a catholic school system, I am not sure I'd recognize that face unless there was a shining halo or something.
My personal answer would probably be Monroe or some historical guys like Stalin/Mao. Current day, easily Bush.

I shouldn't find this surprising coming from someone named Cain. If your brother were here now he'd be pissed with your sacrilege.

I've always been kind of bitter that Cain was somewhat evil in the Bible. Way to ruin a good name!
Hope my future child doesn't mind if his name somehow ends up the same as a villain

Recognized as in... populist recognition? So like, Will Smith or something. Or recognized by people with their critical faculties intact?

As a Christian, I took no offence to the comment. You have a valid point, but I guess the intent of the thread was recognizable figure.
Given the context in which Jesus is portrayed (cross, hallow, Sistine Chapel, Last Supper, etc.) he would be easily one of the most recognized figures in the world. But no one really knows what He looked like as the Bible never once stated any of His features.
...Except I have a rare photograph of Him making a chair with Joseph. It's old, faded, and grainy, but I bet I could get $1000 on eBay for it.
BTW Did you know He wore coveralls and a plaid shirt?

I don't think that's what was meant by 'recognizable figure'.

I picked him and I may be wrong but...David Beckham
you sure about that statement?

He's up there. Probably more well known than Tiger Woods. Soccer is the most popular sport, Beckham is or was the most popular player. My suggestion might have been a little out of date but beyond that it was pretty solid.
But you pretty much proved my point. Bob Hope supported American troops and is an American icon and he wouldn't even be the most recognizable person in America, let alone the world.

IMO any discussion has to start first with who would the majority of Chinese know.
I would say alot mentioned they wouldnt know. They likely would know Hitler, Stalin, etc. Other than that I dont know. John Wayne for actors maybe?

Well, if it's talent we're talking about, I would have to say Michelangelo is up there.

It's a tough question.
First, are we talking most # of people that would recognize said person? Then it becomes a person who's popular in China and India. To have it be more accurate I would have the criteria relate to recognizability on each continent, list them 1-5 and see who makes all 6 lists. Since we are talking about most recognized in the world I would want a system that balances sheer numbers with area, otherwise like I said, it has to be someone who is famous in China/India because they'd blow everyone else away.
Can Jesus and Santa count? Or are we talking living people?
How are we determining it? Showing them a series of pictures and asking them who they recognize? Do they just have to say they've seen it before? Or do they have to give the persons name?
BTW I'd say the top 10 or so would be: Bush, Jesus, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Hitler, Stalin, Ghandi, maybe the Pope John Paul II, Beckham or Ali
