The reason you can't upgrade the hardware right away in the plan is because you get a significant discount on it when you sign the first 3 year deal. If they upgrade you 6 months again at a new 3 year plan discount, they are giving you an additional hardware discount and losing out on 2 and 1/2 years of profits in the mean time.

Unless you have a massive account and pay a ton in monthly fees, it'll be very hard to find any company who is willing to give you another new phone at the 3 year discount in the middle of your contract.

The '3 year' prices on the phones are significantly lower than the actual cost of the phone. They can't offer that to a customer over and over again within the term of the first contract.

If you wanted to purchase the hardware outright, they'd have no problem with it. Heck, they might even give you a small discount, but they can't offer the 3 year discount again unless the contract is up.

The only time they will offer a 3 year discount mid-contract is if you are going from plain cellular to data, as they know you'll be spending a lot more per month.

I've worked with a mobility carrier, if you have any other questions or I didn't quite get the jist of the problem you can PM me if you like.

What daradon said is bang on. The cost of the phone when you initially bought it is heavily discounted. On rogers end, they make up for this discount with the long term contracts and the payments you make. The longer the term you sign, the more months the discount is spread over so the discount is larger.

Giving you a new phone only 1 year into a 3 year contract with a heavy discount means they will be out 66% of the discount they gave you before.

You MAY get only $100 off the cost of a different phone, but you will probably end up paying near full price (ie $500-$800). If you want the phone that badly, you may need to look at the used market.

And just to add onto Daradon's post; and to flip that back around at you (as a devil's advocate)- how hard is it to wait 3 months to switch phones again?

I can see a cell company looking at a person who is calling every time there is a newer or better phone out and wanting to switch, and them saying "If this guy thinks he should get a new phone every 9 months, it isn't cost effective to have him as a customer."

Don't bother waiting for them to call you back. They never do.
