Those are just throwaway songs?? Come on.

I'm aiming my comment towards the U2 albums from the past decade, they always release a "fast catchy" throwaway song first and never ballads.

I grew up with the band and have always been a fan. I agree the first few albums were raw and powerful - but that's typical of youth isn't it? They have evolved over time which changes their sound and they have also experimented along the way which, even if you dislike the experiments, you have to appreciate for trying to push the envelop.

If this album is actually what they wanted to do during their "disco revival" phase or if this has a bit of a 60s sound to it (which is what I picked up from the single) then it should be interesting to hear.

They do put on a really good concert. If that time machine worked I'd like to go back and see them at Red Rocks back in the 80s and to be at Slane Castle for the recording of Go Home. The emotion which comes through the DVD is huge, I can only imagine what it was like being there.

I'm sure it'll grow on me, but on the first few listens, I don't really like it. I agree with many of you. However, my favorite album is still The Unforgetable Fire.

Even so, I'm sure the album will do well and win some Grammy's. It never fails with U2 for some reason. And yet, after all is said and done, I love seeing U2 live. There's always a great atmosphere at the shows.

Saw U2 3 times now, 2 in Dublin (the old Croke park and 1 in Belfast).

The first Dublin one was my first ever concert (1985).

Wayyyyyyyy down the list as a backup band was REM. To be honest, don't remember them.

The Belfast one (Botanic gardens) was a gem in that it all happened within the space of 2 weeks from announcement to concert.

Basically, they wanted to do Dublin but some idiots there decided that they would need planning permission for the stage so after a lot of arguing they decided to give a big FU to the council and annunced that they were going to do it up North.

Great show, probably the bit that stands out for me was that it being so close post ceasefire and the whole crowd rocking suspicious minds.

Music was great, show was awesome, spitfires.

Bono was the usual dick and decided that he should phone the UN re. Yugoslavia in the middle of the show.

Songs alright, but a lot of their stuff I find grows on me.

I'm the opposite to most folks I guess. I prefer the post - War albums and the way they've mixed it up.

That is exactly how I feel. All of the newer songs since Pop I have not liked or enjoyed as much as the classics, or the experimental pieces.

You can hear the song, and it is still not that great. It is not the best U2 song I have ever heard. They have gone a long way from the Joshua Tree. But if people like it, and they must because they are still around, then I guess they are doing what is right for the market.

Sorry, but I love the way right around the time U2 releases an album is usually when Bono gets his love-fest with the charities going.

I've found much of U2's most recent music to be bland, insipid and uninspired...this song would fit into that category. I know that they are capable of better than this but maybe they have lost the magic touch.

Agree.

I'm all for experimentation, even if I don't like it. I'm not sure how one argues that they have been experimentative over the last 10 years. Very bland, and the poetry/lyrics, worse than usual. They were always a band that had a lot of ballads, but almost all their songs are ballads now, with nothing left to say, and one or two 'energy' songs for release in films (Elevation anyone?)

I agree with this, but I always get ridiculed when the subject of U2 comes up and I express my fondness for Zooropa. I'd take the Johnny Cash song on that over just about any other song that U2 has recorded.

That said, I just read that Daniel Lanois will be a producer on the new one. That gives me hope that it will be something good.

I've been a fan since the band first arrived on the scene. I think I was in grade 8. This new single blows donkeys. Hard. Long and hard. Hairy, smelly, ugly donkeys.

After the last 2 albums (I liked Pop), I thought this band was about done. The new single seemed to confirm they had grown even worse than I thought... But I've been listening to the new album streaming on their website, and I have to say most of it ranks up there with their best work. Shockingly good, I'd say.

Disagree. I think its pretty mediocre. I thought they were gonna try and be more adventurous with their sound again but most of this album sounds like rehashes of old U2 stuff, without any of the same passion or energy. Its probably about as good as their last album, some good moments, and a lot of forgettable moments.

I'm with you on Pop though, its a criminally underrated album. U2 was a lot more fun to listen to back then. I also liked the soul and sincerity of All That You Can't Leave Behind...but this latest one is just "meh".

Horrible new album in my opinion. Not a single song I like even remotely. In fact listening to the album actually annoys me, they have found a sound that is fundamentally irritating to me on some deep level. lol

At BEST, each song sounds like an inferior version of a song from some other band that is (authentically) far hipper and far cooler today than U2 has been in over 10 years.

I get that you need to listen a number of times to 'get' certain songs but come-on, its U-frikkin-2. If they are so great how can the new Snow Patrol album offer me 4 fantastic songs on the first listen while they offer me 0.

That is just sad for what is supposed to be a mega-band.
