Goat hangs himself at the Calgary Zoo
Has not been a good year for the zoo at all. Ummm why does a goat need a hanging playtoy in it's exhibit?
http://www.calgaryherald.com/Travel/...450/story.html
A witness says the markhor, a species of large wild goat, some-how got the rope around its neck while on the log walkway.
Aubrey Williams said she was visiting the zoo with her two young daughters and her grandparents when they came across the exhibit, where the animal was in distress.
Williams said the animal was struggling and lost its balance on the log. The markhor fell and was hanging on the end of the rope as it grappled to get its footing on an adjacent rock.
"It's awful," she said.
Williams said when zookeepers arrived, they rushed to cut down the markhor and started performing CPR.
The zoo says the markhor died after becoming entangled in a play toy suspended above the log walk-way. It appears the animal's neck broke when it fell.
The zoo says the toy has been pulled from the exhibit.

Sad event, though the title of the thread makes me laugh. (edit: not sure if it's supposed to be funny, but I think it is)
This is what happens in zoos. Doesn't mean we need an over-reaction, although yes, as I say, it is sad that an animal died in this accidental way.

OMG OMG! Animals shouldn't be in zoos! This is what happens when they are! They should be left to run free in the wild, where a natural predator can kill them instead!
Anyway, that really sucks for the Zoo. This has been a very tough year or so for them.

When I was a kid, our neighbors across the alley had this big Irish Setter.... I remember it being a big, beautiful dog.
I guess they both worked during the day, and while they were gone, the dog was on a long leash in the back yard. They had this garbage can stand with a lid over it, butted up to the back corner of their fence inside the yard. I guess the dog would get bored during the day, so to amuse himself he would jump up onto the stand, and then, I kid you not, he would tightrope the top of the fence! I don't remember, but there must of been like a 2x4 rail to top the fence. Anyhow, there wasn't much room to walk on, but this dog would pace back and forth on top of it!! He would even manage to turn around on it. It was quite a talent. Our kitchen window looked directly across, and we'd see him up there. I remember it being pretty funny cuz the dog would have such a cocky look up there, like he was outsmarting everyone. He would pace the fence back and forth, all the while leashed up. Sure enough one day, the dog fell over the other side. He had just enough leash to keep two legs on the ground. He was yelping away, and we rushed over to throw him back over the fence. I remember it being pretty hard to do, and getting pretty scratched up. Now my memory's pretty faded, but I think this happened more than once. I'm sure my parents must have told the people, but it didn't do any good as one day the dog wasn't so lucky. Yup..... we'd come home or something, and there he was in the back, twisting in the breeze. I guess the leash must have got caught on a fence post or something, and he didn't have the length to get paws on the ground. I imagine being a big dog that his neck would have snapped pretty easily. That was the talk of the 'hood for a couple days!

Buzzard - One of my mom's cats once hung itself on a fence trying to get away from a dog chasing it. Without claws, he couldn't quite make it and got his neck caught between two fence posts. It was the last cat my mom ever had declawed, long before people started to realize that declawing a cat itself is torture.

Holy F. Like seriously is the Sun really a newspaper? haha. I guess the writer got a keyboard tangled around his net and he strangled.
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2...56561-sun.html
Visitors to the Calgary Zoo were horrified yesterday after a wild goat got caught in a rope and strangled.
"It had been there for several years, but somehow the markhor managed to get the rope tangled around its net and then lost its footing," said Cathy Galliver, the zoo's director of conservation.

I have a degree in zoology, but this is why I didn't become a zookeeper. Zookeeping blows goats.
