I think only as "The Source by Circuit City", which they bought out Radio Shack, only to sell the name rights to another company who re-opened Radio Shack, from what I understand.

Not shutting down in Canada.

InterTAN also said its retail sales over the holiday period were above forecast and that the Canadian business remains strong.
An InterTAN spokesperson said that "the Source stores are not part of the U.S. liquidation process and that all stores remain open for business."

I remember that I was with Future Shop when they did their ill fated U.S. expansion. We thought we were going to conquor the U.S. market like we did the Canadian market.
Then CC took an interest and just squashed the hell out of FutureShop USA.
They would give things away for free just to take the fight to FS.

Which weakened FS so badly they were bought by Best Buy.

It still makes me ill to shop at Best Buy. The Futureshop/Best Buy "fake competition" thing makes me sick. It's the same damn store with different color schemes.

And different price tags. I hate both stores, yet I always find myself buying electronics from one of them.

How the hell is the Source still in business? I've never seen more than two customers in the one at Chinook at any time.

You'd be surprised. As a former employee out in Nova Scotia I was privy to sales numbers and some stores do quite well. Either it's the uninformed customer or those that are desperate to buy something and it's their only choice. Location helps them a lot as well as higher prices; selling lucrative service such as cell, satellites, etc. Small town mall locations never seem to go under.

Ive wondered this as well. I can't remember the last time I bought something from them. Everytime I walk by a Source store, it reminds me of those old San Francisco stores.
Junky remote controlled cars, AA battery powered dinosaurs with light-up eyes and other random misc crap. If you look hard enough, maybe you can find a VHS tape rewinder?!?
Has anyone ever bought anything of substance from them? Bigscreen tv's, home theatres, etc.
Plus, does anyone buy all those misc telecommunications odds and ends which they have in the back, or sign up for cell phones there?

40 inch Samsung LCD But I live in a small town.
But I do hate The Source, thankfully they don't ask for my name and address at my location. They don't have real stock rooms so all their boxes just sit in the isles till they can unpack them.

One word.... batteries.
Those g**dam 'unique batteries in cordless phones that look like two AA's taped together but sell for $30 a pop. Nobody seems to carry them but Source. I've also found that if you don't feel like waiting for monoprice to ship cables or doodads, Source is usually the only place to find them easily locally, and cable prices are better than FS or BB.
But I think it's 100X markup on specialized batteries that keeps them going really.

I use to work at the source when I was in college. Many stores do very well. At Christmas time I was make $35 an hour on commission. Not bad for a college guy.
A lot of their stuff is crap. They have a fairly large selction of cables like you said and they do tend to be cheaper. The mark up on cables is friggen stupid. A $20 cable would have a cost price of $2.00. I 8.99 cable would have a cost of like $1.25.
And again like you said with the batteries, lots of selection. Most of the button batteries are $4.99. Cost would be around $1.00. You can get the same computers as you can at BB and FS other than Macs. Prices are fairly close.
I consider the store more like a stocking stuffer store rather than a regular present store.

Right on.
That store never even enters my mind when it comes to electronics (unless I was in the market for a $40 RC car), but it's the first thing that comes to mind when, say, the power adapter for my Sega Game Gear or the cord for my Hot Lips phone craps out. And if I ever needed new rabbit ears for my TV, I don't know if they have them, but they'd be the first place I go.

They have them. The store I went to had 2-3 different types, in different price ranges.

I wondered this as well, but I think that I might have solved the mystery. They sell cheap knock-off home theater equipment out of SUV's and minivans!

I despise Circuit City. It's a crappy place to shop for electronics, which is probably why they are filing bankruptcy.
