Just last week, a guy I know was telling me about some of the flying experiences his wife has had (she's a flight attandent). He told me about how one time, some birds got sucked into an engine and the plane had to make a very hasty emergency landing. Apparently it was a rough enough ride that people were screaming and praying a lot on the way back to the airport...

I can only imagine how scary this must have been to look out your window and see yourself landing in the river. As someone who flies weekly for work, it scares the hell out of me...lol.

Is this the first successful landing of a plane in water?

^^ From what I have been told on the show "Mayday"- yes it is. At least for a jet. Smaller planes have landed on water; and theoretically something like a 727 that had its engines above wing level should be able to do it.

Next closest to successful was an Ethiopian jet that was hijacked, ran out of fuel, and landed in water off the coast of Africa. Something like 35 of the 120 people on board survived. The entire landing was captured on video by people on the beach a few 100 metres away.

Probably. This is what people usually look like after their plane hits the water.

so the pilot loses both engines, has to make an emergency landing in water, manages to guide the plane down into the water and keep it intact, and everybody survives. someone deserves a raise, he just saved his company from a lot of negative press

He deserves to be able to retire, and have his raised salary paid until he dies.

Wow! That pilot deserves an award! That landing took some serious skill.

Often, water landings end up like the Ethiopia Airways jet that was hijacked and ran out of fuel (video below). Even that took a lot of skill, and it saved many lives on board.

This is why Jazz decding to eliminate life vests is a bad idea. They still fly over rivers and other bodies of water...

I'll be sure to catch the inevitable episode of Mayday on this.

Cost savings, both for weight, and for the snacks hidden inside, I am sure.

I've been reading abou this for a few minutes now. Absolutely amazing!

It sure is nice when something that is so potentially bad turns into something inspirational and incredible.

Best pilot ever!

Very fortunate that there were no boats or ferries on that part of the river too...

Well, the Hudson is always full of boats. It was actually good because apparently they were by the plane assisting very quickly after landing.

Keep in mind though, most attempted water landings by planes not meant for water landings, are attempted over the ocean. In general, a river is a nice smooth surface compared to the open ocean.

But it is still a wonder that it stayed completely intact.
