This scam dates back to the 80's. I had somebody approach me about buying speakers. Funny thing is I was in the process of putting together a car stereo so I asked if I could try out the speakers with the car system. The guy went on about how the two systems were not compatable (which is not 100% true.) I told him as long as I didn't crank it they would be fine. They pretty much ended the conversation and drove off.

Lol. I've been appraoched for this at least 5 times over the years. Most recently was a few weeks ago. The dorks were driving a pretty nice full sized chev SUV (greyish) and the pulled up beside me at a Sev up on center street. They were off their game that day because they just asked me all the wrong questions:

Dork: Hey guy... Nice truck. Need a system?
Me: No.
Dork: Are you sure? A truck like that needs a system.
Me: It's factory and it works fine.
Dork: Too bad, man. We got some real good stuff here. Overstock. Boss told us to get rid of it. Got some home theater stuff here, too. Do you have a home theater?
Me: No.
Dork: Oh, man. Imagine watching basketball with surround sound!!
Me: Basketball f'n sucks. (slam)

I'm surprised this sounds so common, this has never happened to me before.

Feel kinda left out... :/

It would be funny to see the website.

I've been approached in 3 different cities for this.

EDIT: Probable eBay fraud on this listing, to establish a "fake" value of the product on ebay history?

Thanks for all of the responses! I obviously figured it was some kind of scam, but kind of doubted that everything was stolen. (Well, the first time I figured that everything was stolen, but when it happened again I figured that there was something else to this).

Anyway, I had no intentions of actually making a purchase, but its funny/interesting to see how widespread this thing is!

I wonder if you could adapt this scam to investments.

Hey buddy... Wanna buy some stock. We bought them for a client, but he doesn't want them. We paid $80 a share, but we'll sell them to you for $10! You look like a smart guy, I'm sure you know that Lehman Brothers is a high end company! Look, it says here right on the certificate, $80!

That's hilarious, these are the exact speaker set I was looking at. I still can't believe they have these magazines and fancy boxes printed with way higher MSRP for these things. Read their website, this is the worse scam there is. *Model number and manufacturer's suggested prices are for identification purpose only. Manufacturer's suggested price do not represent a bona fide selling price in the metro trading area.

The funny thing is the guys out driving around selling these systems actually fit the description of someone who would be selling stolen goods, I'm sure that's not a coincidence.

Funny, the specs say the drivers are 2". They must be PC speakers.

You'd figure the scam with update along with technology. Who the heck needs speakers now? why not like a laptop or something.

Slava, if you buy this stuff, I have some ideas for you to consider.

There is this guy in Nigeria who says he'll send me a few millions dollars if I front him some money so he can get the other funds out of the country.

If not that, buy stocks. There are some good deals to be had.

Really? The one time I've been to Hamilton I was asked if I wanted to buy speakers. They were trying to convince me to bring them back to Nova Scotia on the train with me.

Back when I used to work in Surrey, I was always approached by guys trying to sell me stuff out of their car. It was always at like 7:00 am.

I never bought anything, but one of my co-workers bought an XBOX, PS2, and a car stereo from them. They were obviously stolen though.

When I was young and naive, I bought these. But I ended up bargaining them down from $3000 to $150 for a pair.

I probably still got ripped off.

There was a story (TV paper?? can't remember where I saw it) in the last week or so about some complaints received about people being approached to buy equipment out of a vehicle. The items they were selling were not stolen/illegal... but... I think there may have been a ticket or warning issued to a seller in one case.

Can't find the story online anywhere....
