Global Calgary's Weekend Weather Person is based out of Toronto?

I was flipping the channels today and noticed that Global's weather person on Global Toronto is the same as the person that does the weather on Global Calgary on weekends Michelle Jobin. Does anyone think it is wrong to have the weather person based out of Toronto for a Calgary TV station? I realize that Sportsnet regionalizes sportscasts for example. I guess this is why so many people are losing their jobs in the media.

It's a sad reality in the weather biz. Forecasting offices are being conglomerated into larger ones to cut costs (ie the prairie storm center is now in Winnipeg with the Edmonton office downsized). The only benefit of local forecasters (if you call them that) is that they have a greater understanding how the local land plays a role in the weather (ie chinooks). However, it's only a positive if stations manage to keep them for long term.

In this case though, I believe Global still has their own... perhaps Michele was just doing filler for someones abscense. Or she's now at Calgary global... can never tell, they move around too much haha.

That is creepy for sure. Partly because she is nothing to write home about...that Johanna Wagstaffe from CBC though is another matter!

I couldn't care less where the weather girl is from. I'm not too sure why they even have that segment on the news. Just put the temperatures on the bottom of the screen for the next day or two and I think that is enough.

If you notice on the weekends the anchor goes to the "Weather Centre" but you can tell they are not in the same studio.

Canwest Global has had some big cuts lately, I guess they are trying to do the same job with a single centrally based weather correspondent.

Hopefully Global Calgary continues with their Joey Tomato'esque hiring practices.

i never understood why "weather" is news .. especially in this information age. Do I really care what the temps accross the country are?

One time I saw a US ad for their local weather and they were bragging how they could tell me the weather "RIGHT OUTSIDE MY WINDOW". Well great,thats helpful to me? Cant I look out the window myself?

Anyhow, never mind the weather, whats the point of the news even. Usually they do a terrible job of covering an issue and by the time its on TV, its already old news. Guess they havent heard of this new thing called the internet! The news as a TV program is becoming more and more irrellevent.

A bit of a different issue, but I'm not sure TV news will ever be totally irrelevant. The problem (and strength) with the internet is anybody can post there, whether they are telling the truth or not. At least in the traditional mediums there is some degree of responsibility and oversight; there are checks in place to attempt to get the story right, it takes more than one person to attempt to publish a story.

My personal belief is that if TV news is in trouble because of the internet it is because it is trying to be too muck like the internet. Publishing stories without vetting them. Publishing based on rumours in attempts to get a "scoop". These are areas traditional news cannot beat the internet. And when the trustworthiness of traditional media becomes as questionable as the internet then the traditional forms of the media become irrelevant.

fair enough ... i think where TV news will have a place is in the "news magazine" model. The 6:00 news is really a glorified highlite package and frankly they dont provide enough depth on any issue.

I noticed that too... Global and to a lesser extent City, are way easier on the eyes than CTV and CBC. Makes watching the news and listening to typical lowest common denominator journalism BS appealing.

I agree with that to a point. They try and show too many stories. They need to do fewer stories and flesh them out a bit more.

Sure, if you're travelling, or if you have relatives that are experiencing terrible weather and you want to phone them and gloat.

When I was visiting my parents in LA one time, I watched the Fox newscast. The weatherman came on, it was forecast 72 for the whole week, so he said "every day's gonna be like yesterday", and then they went back to the anchors.

Oh, I totally agree... but maybe that's intentional. Scare you awake to start the day. Kind of like why Mercedes deliberately makes their driver seats a little uncomfortable.
