Exactly!
I had a bad experience flying from Calgary to Vancouver when I was 14. Now it was a along time ago, but I had the window seat and a huge man sat right next to me, literally overflowing into my personal space. And I like my personal space! The guy was so big he had to get a "seatbelt extension" from the staff. What was a 1 hour flight seemed like an eternity............

I'm a big dude and I've travelled a lot (all 7 continents). Usually I'm the biggest person on the plane. Maybe not the tallest, maybe not the heaviest, but combined I'm usually the biggest. I still have several inches on the seatbelt.

I can't ever recall seeing someone on a plane that has needed a seatbelt extender, let alone someone who is so big they need two seats. I just can't see it happening that often at all.

I think the grand total cost to each of the airlines of this will be less than $25,000.00 per year. They'll cry and complain and claim it *could* cost millions, but in reality, after 12 months, even at full freight ticket prices (not last minute sale prices, or standby prices).

I've had this happen to me before. It was an exit row with extra leg room. I guarded my space by keeping my shoulders, which are kind of broad to being with, square and my legs spread wide enough apart to protect my legroom. I would not let me encroach on my space and he became pretty uncomfortable pretty quickly. After 10 minutes he moved to a different seat that wasn't an exit row.

It was a fun flight considering that along with the guy in front of me who spent 30 minutes trying to recline his seat and not understanding why it wasn't happening for him.

Yeah but where do we draw the line? How fat do you have to be to get 2 seats?

In fact, if someone is 6'6'' I say they get 2 seats, just instead of side by side, they are one in front of the other. This way they can lean their seat back or stretch their legs. A lot more deserving, at least they didn't choose to be tall.

If you can't afford an extra seat you don't deserve to fly.

I'll let you figure it out what the number one cause of both of those are (hint: it involves buffets), but you are supporting my statement.

Regardless, I'm not implying these people don't exist. But I am telling you that the % of disabled people you specify, relative to obese people, is absolutely minute in comparison. There are far more obese people than criminals/drunk drivers, in both incidence and life span. Obese people are invariably unhealthy, whereas the same is not true of the other group.

No doubt, the numbers relate to each other as you say. I don't disagree.

Here is the post that Daradon was replying to when I replied to him. Daradon backed way off of the word disabled and I wonder why with my post.

http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showpos...6&postcount=23

Ducay is willing to throw every obese person into the same pile yet will go out of his way to help any other disabled people regardless of how they came to their disability? Doesn't make sense to me.

That's what generated my response to Daradon.

You should really change a portion of this thread title of to 'medically obese'.

This is only required for those that are classified as medically obese (much like in Dion's post earlier). This does not mean that you can just be overweight from eating Wendy's everyday and go ask your Dr. for a note so that you can get a free seat (2nd seat that is).

This is also just the airlines following through with what's handed down to them from Transport Canada. The airlines aren't the ones asking for the note, rather than enforcing that one exists.

All that said, the tag for this thread still makes me laugh.

Just give me a free upgrade to 1st class and I'll be happy.

I'm 6'4 and trying to get through an Air Canada flight on something like a DC-10 (actually more like 90% of AC flights) is hellish. If the person in front of me even considers for a minute putting their seat back - I usually unleash a flurry of knees to their back.

WestJet IMHO is the way to fly for tall people. Much more leg room.

Do they get an extra meal?

Also. If they're so fat that they need two seats, what happens if they need to take a crap? (I'm being serious).

The Wii tells me that I'm at least 25 lbs overweight. I'm 6'2" 208lbs. I was playing Wii fit at the woman's place for the first time and it asked all kinds of questions and then determined that my BMI was 26 or something and that my BMI should be around 22. So I set at "target weight loss" to see how much weight I'd have to lose to get to a "healthy" 22 BMI and I got it down to 180-something before it told me that it was unhealthy to lose more than that in the time specified. But even at 180-something, my BMI was still at 23. So to get under 22, I would have to be around 175. And 22 was still the high end of the BMI.

All I can say about this is that I guess I have a bit of a gut, but if I lost a few puonds off strictly the tummy I don't know where I'd lose the rest of this "fat" that I apparently have. Maybe this is just another example of asians trying to kill us white guys. They're trying to starve me to death!!

More likely yet the airlines will make more money because fat people buy more in-flight snacks and drinks.

Sorry to bump this thread but this article was quite interesting and provoked quite a debate at work. Picture in the link

Quote:
Obese air passenger in economy seat has picture taken

The picture, posted on an aviation blog, was reportedly taken by a flight attendant to illustrate to airline managers the difficulty of dealing with passengers who cannot fit into seats.
It is unclear if the man was aware his picture was being taken or whether the flight, on US carrier American Airlines, took off with the passenger spilling out of his seat.

Airlines already offer extended seatbelts to larger passengers to comply with safety rules but a number of carriers now insist obese customers buy an extra seat.
US domestic no-frills airline Southwest has a “customer of size” policy that insists passengers who cannot lower both armrests buy a second ticket which is reimbursed if the flight is not full.

As others have asked, why isn't he sitting in the two empty seats behind him?

He looks like he's sitting on the arm rest.

Big guy though!!

I'd hate to see him try and use the bathroom on that plane.

On a similar note ..

Well, when I fly the person in front of me can't recline their seat, and that's unfair to them. Hopefully they don't make me buy that seat, but if they put me in business class for no extra charge I wouldn't complain.

I'd hate to see him use any bathroom anywhere. He looks like he's about 6'8" if you compare his height to the seat backs. I doubt he would even fit in two seats.

How could they even let him on the plane thats just stupidly unsafe

I'm all for this.

There is nothing worse than being next to a really obese person on an airplane and having him "overlap" on to your seat.
