Thumbs up More Bell TV News

Bell has finally enabled the 6141 HD receiver External Hard drive functionality. Reportably you can use up to a 1 T hard drive to enable the PVR functions.

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=99494

Also Bell is coming out with two new HD receivers.
The 6131 which rumour has it will also be EHD ready but will not have the OTA tuner, for $199.
The 9241 PVR will supposedly have two HD tuners but it will only be able to operate one TV and it won't have PIP for $499.

According to this thread, they are coming out the middle of this month and there will also be a drop in price for the older 6141 and 9242. So if you're planning on buying a new HD receiver, maybe wait a week.

This is the latest receiver from Dish Net which Bell usually gets a version of in a year or two. It is a SlingLoaded PVR and does 1080p with Video On Demand through the internet and has a 1TB hard drive.

Two HD tuners but only one TV and non PIP? That doesn't make much sense...

VOD would be a great feature. One of the only things I'm missing about Shaw.

Reading on DHC I guess having the two outputs can cause all sorts of customer service issues. Keep in mind that there are people far less geeky than you or I who use these things. The old IT rule of Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Having a sling feature on this would be quite handy. Assuming it works of course.

Same here but it will still be able to record one program while watching another.
I don't think anyone has actually saw one of these yet, so they could be the best thing since sliced bread, or not.

Bought a HD yesterday, plugged it in, had issues formatting first time around. Tried again, worked fine... and now I have a PVR!

Good show. I hear you now have 9 day program guide. One thing I'm curious about, can you pause live programming?

The 9 days in advance is a feauture I didn't think would come in handy but it is actually really, really nice.

At some point last year my Shaw Guide went from 8 days in advance, to now 15 days. I didn't think I would care that much, but it's great. Right now I can see my guide until 9:00 PM on the 29th.

Some channel are slow to update though. I've noticed Showcase HD doesn't have the right programing until a couple days in advance.

Yup, you can pause live programming.

Didn't notice the 9 day programming (don't usually look that far ahead), but I'm sure it will be useful.

Here's what's happening now. Apparently the 9242 and the 6141 are being discontinued and the 6141 has been dropped in price to $199.99. The 9242 is on sale at Future Shop for $399.99 and I hear they are running out of stock. Best Buy should price match for even less.

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0095087&catid=

The 6131 and the 9241 are also now available at Bell stores. The 6131 is $199.00 before any deals. This receiver doesn't have an OTA tuner and doesn't come with a HDMI cable otherwise it seems the same as the 6141 with PVR capabilities.

The 9241 is a single TV receiver with two tuners and is $499 before any deals as it looks like Bell is trying to put out cheaper variations.

So, is there any reason to get a 9241 over a 9242?

It seems that the 9241 just removed a bunch of features from the 9242. Did it improve anything?

The 9242 will still be capable of mpeg4, right?

Nope, no reason to get the 9241 if you have the choice.
The 9242 is capable of mpeg4.

Doesn't the 9241 have a "slingbox" type of feature? I thought I was reading something about that- not sure if it's just over your home network of over the net.

I assume the 9200 is also capable of mpeg4.

The slingbox functionality might come in useful at some point, if the 9241 has it. I dont need it now though.

I rent one 9200 and own one. I am thinking I should return the one rental unit and buy a 9242. I'd hate to be pigeon-holed into an inferior PVR for the next 5 years. I like the OTA antenna (being able to hook an OTA feed right into the PVR would be handy, once it gets here) because the uncompressed signal should be a far superior feed. I also use PiP from time to time.

Yeah, I did read something about that too. I guess I forgot about the slingbox feature. It's hard to keep every function of each receiver in mind and I guess we won't know everything until they get in peoples hands.

The 9200 isn't mpeg4 Draug but who knows when we'll need it.

I already have a 9242 but I might phone Bell's retentions and see what kind of deal they'll give me on a 6141 or 6131.

I went over to DigitalHome to do a little research. To my suprise, CFCN has started OTA HD transmission in Calgary on Jan 7 2009. It seems people are watching it right now. I couldnt find any information on people with Bell receivers watching it, using the built in ota tuner.

Vulcan (or anyone), do you know what to do to set up the 9200's OTA tuner?

I scan for OTA digital channels, using the menu, and nothing shows up. I am a stone's throw from Signal Hill, so I should receive whatever they are broadcasting.

All I know is you'll need an antennae, since you're close, even try rabbit ears if you've got some hanging around. If you buy an antennae, maybe make sure you can return it if it doesn't work.
