Asians don't like brown and Jewish people? In Vancouver Indian/Chinese are quite common, never thought it would cause anymore trouble than Chinese/white?

Someone has to say it, but like in many other cultures and among older generations - the darker the skin, the less accepted and more stigma applied. I don't know where the Jewish people come in from Lchoy's list. I've never heard of that...and if you are extrapolating from our grandparents generation then yes, the Japanese apply (destroyed and ransacked my grandparent's hotel) and perhaps even the English (my great-grandfather was killed in the Opium wars when Britain used it's navy to force China to accept more and more opium in exchange for goods). They had this stuff figured out long before the crack-dealers of today

I am currently living in China and, yes, I eat at 'Asian' restaurants all the time. If I didn't, I would probably starve to death. But my point is this... I have met countless people who generalize and stereotype Westerners from one bad experience or from what they heard from the state controlled press here. Do I think it's fair to be lumped in with the all the playboy types who come to Asia looking for a good time, or to be viewed suspiciously because some American did something? No, but I can understand it. Generalizing is human nature, part of our defense mechanism. It is a survival skill, and if we couldn't assume that "all tigers are dangerous" we wouldn't be here today. Of course, it's not fair to those individuals lumped in with the bad. But why should you be surprised by this? Travel around the world and I dare you to find a place any different. Those who take pride in being 'open-minded' and look down on those they think are not, are generally naive IMO.

Asians have an image problem in Calgary right now and will until the gangs are gone. Look, I can understand the need to protect your own and claim "it's not fair", but don't look down on people who are trying to protect *their* own.

OK, fire away with the racist labels!
What!? Let me see if I can sum up your thinking here. The OP was Asian places are dangerous, so I will not go to them. Most people think this is irrational and stupid. Your thought is there are racist Asians, so the OP is correct?

The OP is wrong and the racist Asians are stupid. I don't see how this "defends" the OP.

I'm not calling the OP or you racist...just illogical and irrational.

I'm surprised by the inclusion of jews as well...

For all intents and purposes we are a caucasian-copycat of asians within north american culture.

We go through lots of school, are concerned with appeasing our parents and grandparents, gravitate towards prestige and specialty employment (mostly at the behest of nagging mothers), and don't like to spend money.

It's a match made in heaven!

The thing is, from my experience, almost all immigrated Asians are ridiculously racist. My parents for example got all excited when I said I was seeing an Asian girl (prior to her I had only dated white girls), until they found out she was Thai, suddenly excitement turned to ridicule.

Hey, I got the solution!

Eat ONLY at places that have seen a shooting death. So far, a shooting has never happened twice in the same location, so places that have seen shooting deaths are technically the safest places to eat.

The one exception might be the Cecil Hotel, but that bar is now closed.

It seems the Jews are thought pretty highly of here in Shanghai. They've got some history here and have built a positive image.

Obviously, what you're talking about here is a pretty reasonable observation of what commonly happens, but it doesn't justify what commonly happens. Wouldn't you feel much happier if the next time someone calls you 'laowai' and starts making ignorant comments about you they are admonished by their friends for thinking in an idiotic way. I bet you'd start to feel a lot more comfortable than either having to interject or put up with listening to an ignorant conversation about you. I expect bigotry living in China as well, but it would be nice if I noticed more Chinese standing up against it.

This thread is not only funny, but it's a nice example of how things can be different. I wonder how the Asian posters on the board would feel about this place if nobody had made fun of the OP's wacky decision.

I don't know if it counts as one, but it's probably enough that you better make sure you're present at all the family get togethers. Otherwise they might start getting organized. Miss a couple of family dinners, and the next thing you know the kids are sharpening their chopsticks and passing fortune cookies with white powder in them.
