You should be able to use an HDPVR on an SD TV and use the digital channels. My shaw HDPVR outputs a 480i signal when I'm not watching HD. I believe Shaw does, or at least used to, offer an SDPVR but for an extra $100 why not future proof yourself a little bit?
That said you can find old Shaw SDPVR's on craiglist and kijiji that you'll be able to transfer to your shaw acount...

They don't sell them new anymore from what I understand but the DCT3080 was a non-HD PVR.
How soon would you be upgrading to HD? If within the next year or so I'd just but the HD version of it.

Any of my friends who bought the Shaw SD PVR have said that they felt it was a bit of a waste of money, because eventually they will get an HDTV and then want the HDPVR.
And what is nice about already owning an HD box is that when you eventually get an HDTV, you don't have a $500 hit to get an HDTV. Let's say you are thinking of maybe a new TV for the living room, and you see what you think would normally be a $1400 TV on for $900. Sweet- you rush down and pick it up, but now you think you should get the HDPVR.
I know I had an HD receiver (not the PVR- my mistake) prior to getting an HDTV, and when I got my HDTV (won it in a draw) I was very happy to be able to just hook it up and it would work.

I will only upgrade if a current TV craps the bed...
From reading here the HD PVR will put out a signal that my crappy old CRT TV can use right ??

When I first had a HDpvr, I didn't have an HD tv. Hooked up with with the normal red, yellow, white composite cables no problem.

Anyone who tells you any differently just didn't set it up correctly.
Guaranteed if you purchase the SD PVR you will be kicking yourself.

The other thing to keep in mind. Even watching an HD broadcast on an old SDTV- the picture quality is still a lot better. Best analogy I can say is it;'s like going from VHS to DVD.

Fair enough, and a perfectly legitimate reason.
There are some good deals to be had though, so keep an eye out. They are coming down in price. I've noticed a several hundred dollar difference from this year to last. So if you have the HDpvr now, in a year the price might not be an issue.

I saw a few at the future shop in DeerFoot meadows but once they are gone they're gone for good. They may have a few left.
I picked up an HDPVR recently and have no idea why there is a USB port of the front.
Why is that there? Can I transfer taped shows to a portable hard drive or at least use one as additional storage space?
Can any one lend me some insight. Thanks

It is there to allow salespeople to point to it and refer to "future ability to add an external hard drive" with the hopes that the customer will hear them wrong, assume you can add an external hard drive, and buy it.

So essential it does exactly what my HD TV did before I bought the $500 PVR - Nothing!
