Default Moving to Edmonton...

So I'm headed to University this coming summer and was wondering the dorms at the U of A are alright. Alright meaning.. are the dorms much better than the dorms at U of C? I know a fact that the U of C dorms are REALLY bad from people who stayed there few years back, one of my close friends got food poisoning from the dorm food... OR should I look for a roommate for an apartment or condo? Although it will cost more money, I'm not really sure.

So does anyone have experience or any to say about the dorm rooms at the U of A?

I lived in Lister Hall in 2000.. back before they built the new building where the rooms have their own Bathrooms. I would never have lived there for a 2nd year but at the same time if I could do it all over again I would still live there my first year.

The bathrooms get kind of gross, especially on the weekend when the cleaners are off. Its usually too loud to study and the food gets pretty disgusting after a few weeks. But that is all a part of the 1st year experiance, if you are fortunate enough to go to school away from home.

The parties are legendary, and you meet way more people than you normally would if you lived by yourself in an apartment or even shared one with a couple other people. Chances are you will meet at least one really good friend that you could possibly move in with the year after. Plus in Lister hall most of the floors have 2 halls of girls and 1 hall of guys on each floor, how can you not love those ratios?

I had some friends move into HUB in their first year in either bachelors, 2 or 4 bedroom places and all wish they would have come to Lister hall instead, at least for their first year. IMO it was the most memorable part of my first year of university.

well, I never lived there but partied a ton about 100 years ago. I don't thin kmuch has changed. Pretty similar to the dorms in Calgary if my recollections are correct. You're always going to be better off getting a place with a kitchen, etc.

Well I never got to live in lister but I've had plenty of friends who have.

From what I've heard, good experience for your first year... nothing more than that.

Food is always the same, washrooms can get dirty, can be very loud when you want to study... etc.
But it's a good place to meet new people and from there, try to find a place on your own which is cheaper (should be).

HUB was great to live in the first year, unless your parents are loaded, you wont be living near the UofA unless you want to be living like sardines packed in water.

PM'd.

MYK is right - living near campus can be expensive. I think the best bet is to live in UofA housing.

Well living by campus isn't too expensive as long as you do your research ahead of time. I live pretty close to campus (near safeway on whyte)... while my parents bought my apartment, I have a friend in the safe complex who rents.

For a 1 bedroom, she pays $950, but this place is large enough to house 2 people comfortably.
Or I have another friend living in a house with roomates and he only pays $400.

In the end, the cost of living off campus is cheaper since you only pay for rent, utilities and groceries.

Living in residence, you NEED to pay for a meal card... which are very expensive and the food is horrible.

But if this is your first time in Edmonton, want to meet some new people... Lister is a good place.

I loved residence at U of A. I met a ton of good people there. After the first week you know 50 people, while everyone outside of res knows no one. The parties are crazy, the pranks are awesome.

Food isn't to bad. The meal card works with a lot of places (booster juice, subway, burger king, coffee places, tim hortons, and the cafeteria etc..lots LOTS more) and you can also go to the little grocery store on campus and it works there so you can buy your own bread and peanut butter or whatever.

I loved residence, i lived in 3 mac and had a roommate in a little room.

One thing i reccomend not saying you are "quiet" on the app because then they stick you on the top floors where everybody is boring and you never get invited to parties. Go to a loud floor, the parties are wilder, the girls are hotter and it'll be a way better experience.

Who the hell studies in there little res room anyways? Go to SUB or a library.

Edmonton has its share of criminals and creeps, but the people are generally great folks. The city of Champions tag is not because of sports, but for the city's spirit and can-do attitude. It was conceived after the city's terrific response to the 1987 tornado and the city's rep for giving to others and community spirit in staging big events like Universiade. I'll quit now; I suspect this point of view won't be warmly received here.

If you end up living in the Hub residences, just promise me you'll hang a big Flames flag from your window facing into Hub. A guy did that last year, I'd smile every time I walked by it. He must've graduated now(or moved residences) because its not there anymore. I miss seein that when I walk through there.

I did the same thing in Lister with my window and alot of people did the same (after?). It was awsome, the ratios were like 10 Flames jerseys to 2 Canuck jerseys to the odd Oilers jersey.

I lived in Lister for 2 years, old lister middle floor and new lister bottom floor. Living there was a blast, meet lots of people, great pranks, great parties. Food sucks and it is dirty.
