Around 150 million 3D glasses are being given away in the U.S. so television viewers can watch a 90-second commercial during the Super Bowl game Feb. 1.
DreamWorks Animation announced the give away ahead of the telecast in which an advertisement for the animated film Monsters vs. Aliens will be shown with 3D effects.
The cost of the stunt is somewhere in the "tens of millions of dollars" said DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg.
Katzenberg said the quality of the 3D experience will be high. The glasses will use updated technology and not the old red-blue system.
If any of our American friends on here can find a way to get these glasses up to Canada, it would be appreciated!

It won't matter if you have them because the American feeds will be simsubbed over and the only commercials we'll get will be for Tim Hortons and Scotiabank.

Hehe. Yes if you watch the CTV feed or local US channel.
In years previous, at least in Calgary if you watched the Rochester normal and or HD feed you got the US commercials.

Unless you have an American satellite package, you won't be getting the American feeds. Last year Rogers Cable, which simsubs far less then Bell or StarChoice, had the Canadian feed simsub both the eastern and western US feeds.
Maybe there might be a cable operator out there that can get around the simsub regulations but I doubt it.
Am I richer than I think in 3D? Do Panago pizzas look more appetizing in 3D? Will So You Think You Can Dance Canada promos look less crappy in 3D? Tune in Feb 1 to find out.

Well, I've gotten the American commercials the last 3 years with Shaw Digital cable, so I don't see it changing now.
Didn't they try this 20 years ago and I had to run to Mac's to buy red-blue glasses?
Was a total scam.
Yeah, and I think the Rolling Stones had something to do with it.
Geez, 150 million pieces of cardboard and (presumably) 300 million pieces of plastic. That's a lot of "stuff" to manufacture and throw away for a single commercial.

Super bowl hype + internet hype = worth it

I don't doubt it will generate a lot of hype for the movie, but is it really worth it to cut down a forest and create mountains of waste so some people can watch a commercial?
No, it isn't.

I still have mine from when I took my nephew to see that in the theatre. I tried using them to see FOUR dimensions in real life, but alas, it didn't work. (They also don't turn B-cups into D-cups, in case you were wondering).
I'm not watching the Snore Bowl to re-use them, though. I'm sure the ad'll be on Youtube anyway.
