so my car got broken into
first time for me. i was parked outside the Shaw building downtown tonight and open my car door to go home after my shift to see glass everywhere and a nice big rock sitting in my passenger seat. they rifled through all my stuff, but left everything of value (Siruis radio, CD's) but took my condo garage door remote and the lugnuts from my summer rims (wtf?). could have been worse i guess, but still a really crappy way to come back from holidays
so anyone know a good glass shop in Chestermere or NE Calgary? it's a Mazda 3, and i figure from talking to others with similar cars that i'm looking at a $200-300 bill for the fix

I'd inform your condo board ASAP about the remote, if you haven't thought of that already. I've heard a common thing for theives is to grab, or look at the registration address, and grab the garage door opener.
I lived in a condo, and had no idea what was happening with my car, unless I was driving it, in the underground parkade. That'll be a major jackpot if they get in there with your opener.

ya i already figured the reason they took it, calling them first thing in the morning so they can hopefully deactivate the code for it. but since i live in Chestermere and it was likely some random bum downtown smashing people's cars i'm not sure he'd be ambitious enough to take that walk

If he stole the remote, I doubt it was just some bum. I don't think a bum would steal lugnuts too, unless they're some sort of a clever way to ingest some sort of drug that I don't know about.

I'm thinking that, even though his method was a rock, bums don't need bolts to spinners, let alone a random garage door opener. I wouldn't pass it off as nothing.

Inform them by phone and then follow it up with a letter so that there is a paper trail. On the off chance that there is an incident, you don't want the fingers pointed at you.
My experience with car break ins at condo complexes is that a specific area is targeted for three or four months, hitting several complexes within a few blocks of each other. Then the theifs move on. It's a cycle that will occur eventually regardless of where you live, but you don't want someone pointing the finger at you for not doing enough to inform the Corporation when in reality it is just your condo's time.

i'm definitely not passing it off as nothing and i need to call the condo board anyway to get a new remote, but if someone wanted to take a trip from downtown out to chestermere for the sole purpose of breaking into an underground garage, they wouldn't even need the remote. it would be easy enough to get in regardless if they were determined

With the lugnuts they stole, did they also take the key for the locking lugnut? I am just curious if that would help them sell the rims if they found them as well...perhaps they are thinking you keep the rims in the storage area in the underground parkade.

they were all in the same bag, so ya they took the special socket. the storage area is locked by a thick steel door with a separate key though, so even if they get into the garage they're not getting into the storage room

First...sorry to hear.
But this reminded me of when I was about 18, some punks broke into our house - they rifled through most of the house and their big score was a Costco box of gum....somehow missing the Rolex watch that was sitting on top of my dad's dresser, even though the dresser itself had been rifled through.

ya we had several break in problems when i was a kid growing up. when i was in grade 7 someone broke in and stole all of my sega genesis games (which i had a few of), took a jar full of money my brother was saving, and the keys to get into the shop so they could steal the 4 wheeler we had. that and this crap tonight has never helped my overall negativity towards society

definitely not, my co-workers car was hit at the same time with the same scenario (his CD's were all still there, only $30 in cash was missing) and they were parked right next to each other. plus the cop who came to record the information said they had problems in that area with similar break-ins, so it was 99% a random event

Quite often the degenerates that are car prowling are looking for cash. Spare change really, whatever toonies and loonies you may have. They're not interested in fencing stolen goods - too much work . When our parkade was hit, laptops and $2K golf club sets were left - it was all about the cash.
Oh and fuel tags - make sure you still have your EasyPay tags if you had any.
Cops really don't give a crap about car prowlings. Their only use in this situation is to provide the paper for you to write the Police Report you may need for insurance purposes.

It's sometimes odd what they take and don't take.
About 9 years ago i had my SUV broken into. They took a jacket and a portable CD player but left my expensive golf clubs in the back. Naturaly i was sweating bricks when i saw the glass on the ground. I had just inherited those clubs from my father who passed away a year earlier.
Filed a report with police and nothing ever came of it.

i didn't expect an actual police investigation to take place, all i wanted was the incident on record. the cop was quite frank as well that there was little chance of anyone being caught, but said it was good to report as the more hits they get in an area, the more patrols they do (which seeing as its the area where i work, i definitely want)
so any recommendations for auto glass places? my brother recommended Crystal from when his Durango side window broke, anyone have experiences with them?

Do you live in the Condos near the Chestermere Town Hall? If so, you live very close to me.
