Default Programs for accessing other computers on your network?

Hey guys,

I want to hook up a desktop to a tv so i can stream online programs and watch it on the tv. However, I want to control it that desktop from a laptop or a computer downstairs. Reason being is I don't want the living room all cluttered up with keyboard/mouse etc when all i'm using the computer is to watch online programs. Any recommendations on any of these programs?

Thanks!

or

Start->All Programs->Accessories->Communications->Remote Desktop Connection

Its free!

If you have an Xbox 360, there are programs that let you stream videos from you computer to the Xbox wirelessly wirelessly. That way you wouldn't have to plug any computer into the TV and have anything sitting in that room anyway.

The one we use is tversity. I'm not sure if there's other similar programs out there too. It allows you to browse and play the video files on your PC through your xbox. I use it to watch TV shows I've downloaded and it works great.

The only thing I'm not sure about, is if you can use it for live streaming videos. So far, I've only used it on fully downloaded videos.

I'll second TVersity. http://tversity.com/

TVersity is the easiest solution to the Xbox media center stuff. Unfortunately Windows Media Center doesn't support most of the current video codecs out there, meaning it needs to get transcoded. TVersity handles all that for you without getting into the nitty gritty of it.

that's what i love about the PS3 i got for christmas. out of the box it recognized and was able to play all my movies on my PC, without any 3rd party software. the XBOX has gotten a lot better since launch, but ironically the PS3 is still better for natively opening files on a Windows network

Wait...how do you do it with the PS3. I was stressing myself out with the 360 (finally got it to work after years of trying), but didn't know I could have been using the PS3 all this time.

Do you know if the PS3 will work well with a Mac? I'm thinking of switching from 360 to PS3 and this is an important part of my consideration.

as long as you can setup folder sharing on the Mac it should work, the PS3 just searches for any shared files on whatever network it's connected to and lists them for you

EDIT: just found this How-To from Apple, so you're set

if you go into the main PS3 menu and under Videos, there should be a Search Shared Network or some similar option. if you've setup file sharing in Windows it should find your PC. i originally set mine up using Media Player 10 for my XBOX and the PS3 automatically detected what i had shared
