Thanks. My mom is having a bit of a rough time right now... She lost both her parents in the last 3 years as well, but at least they had full lives. Sucks to watch someone dying of cancer.

Chances are, if you read the herald, you've read about my family in one of those Christmas "Be thankful for what you have... because you could be this family" stories in the past.

It does suck. Back in 2000 i watched my father die a slow death from colon cancer.

Best wishes. I know I couldn't do it. If I'm having as much of a tough time with a breakup (no its not the first time I've broken up) I can't imagine losing a close loved one. Selfishly, I hope I'm the first to get waxed.

I would post the NYE game day thread...as I am unbelievably bored but HD's threads are so awesome and I fear mine would be lame....probably because some people would not find "The Oilers Suck. That is all" to be a helpful GDT.

Rye and Coke is still tasty.

I've stayed up way to late the last two nights. 7 AM last night, and it's 4:30 now and I'm not going yet.

Half way through my first week off in 11 months and I haven't done a damn thing yet.

I think that's a very bad side effect of working too much overtime and I have no idea how to correct it.

I wish I could do that, I would get in big trouble for that!

Played Texas holdem at a Friend's house last night, my 5th time I ever played.
How does one know when to bluff? I didn't get a lot of good hands and I kept folding all night.

This site has really helped me.

www.wizardofodds.com

You have to remember with Poker, position is almost more important than the cards. Also work out the odds of the flop, chances are low someone has pocket face cards, if no face cards come on the flop and you are in position I find its a good place to bet, not all in but say 5 or 6 times the big blind.

Also remember, with poker, sometimes you lose. When you hear people talk about bad beats, that is complete horseshat IMO. no one knows what cards you are holding or what will come up.

In poker, you have to be willing to lose, to win. If you are playing not to lose you will never win.

Also, depending on the size of the game, flushes and straigts win alot of hands, so a 5 8 suited isnt necessarily a bad hand - EDIT - this assumes no one raises pre flop etc.

Also, sometimes you just get shat for cards, you can't help it.

to add to what MYK said, position is a big part of poker, but if you play with the same people on a regular basis, you start to learn their tendencies as well and can feel more confident when trying to make a bluff.
Remember, most of the time, youre not actually playing the cards but rather playing the other players
I play almost every week with the same group of friends, and have gotten a reputation as a tight player, that I can win the odd pot with absolute crap with the right bet
Also there will be times where you play everything almost perfectly and you still lose, such is the way with poker
losing with pocket rockets to a 2/5 off suit is no fun, but it happens every once in a while

Being at work on New Years Eve day sucks. It's draining me of any excitement I had for New Years tonight. Anyone got any big plans?

I'm probably going to do my usual New Years tradition of kicking it with the family at home. I dunno what it is about NYE but I can never seem to get excited for it...Generally I'm always down for a party but New Years is the one night I always seem to take off.

I guess it's nice to wake up in the new year without a splitting headache and feeling like you've gotta puke...

I'm having the same type of New Years tonight, family and watching hockey. They always end up being the best New Years. Too much over-planning and pre-excitement usually just leads to dissappointment.

Got a last minute invitation to visit a friend tonight. It's very nice, but she won't be watching any hockey for sure, so now I will miss the World Junior game, which I was planning to watch.
Did anyone watch The Price is Right today? This 19 year old kid won 2 cars, a Mustang and a Charger, plus a scooter, plus $26,000 in cash. It was his birthday! How cool is that.

Speaking of the WJC game tonight, do you think it's uncool to bail on dinner plans because I forgot Canada/U.S. were playing primetime today?

im annoyed that there are two huge games on tonight (canada vs us and flames vs oilers) and i probably wont be watching either one because of a new years party......hopefully we'll watch them anyways.
machiavelli i would still go to dinner, but need to be home for "something" at 7" how long can dinner be? hopefully its not at 7 or something. guess it also depends who dinner is with, if its the girlfriends parents or something, prob not a good idea to skip it

What's uncool is having dinner somewhere that wouldn't have a tv handy to watch the game!
