Marty Schoettenheimer.

That would be crazy, yet interesting.

Although San Diego should have never let him go (or at least not in favor of Norv Turner), I think Denver should look at someone new... or at least, not as old.

Go the route of the Steelers - you're a great franchise that has had plenty of success. Commit to a guy in anticipation for the long term, not some stop-gap coach like Schoetteheimer.

Yeah, I'm just brainstorming a bit.

The guy I'm really afraid of is Jason Garrett. Guys like that scare me.

Just done talking to a Broncos's buddy of mine. He figures Bowlen may have wanted to strip him of GM duties after his FA failures the last few years, and Shanahan wanted the full deal or nothing.

Me being a SEA fan, first guy I thought of for DEN was Holmgren.

Somewhat of a perfect situation for him. Doesn't have to build from the ground up as he did in SEA, has a young QB to mold, could have total control like Shanahan did with an owner who's not going to pry very much. Could move up into strictly GM when he's done completely with coaching. Laid back, relativley speaking, town, which suits his style.

Of course, the credo for the last 10 month since he announced this was his last year, he's made it clear over and over he's taking time off to spend with family for at minimum a year. I believe him, he's a man of his word, with is wife travelling all over the world doing charity and missionary work, taking a year to stop and smell the roses is Holmgren's kind of style and personality, after a reflective last year.

But stranger things have happened.

Shanahan, who knows. Dallas comes to mind when they punt Phillips, but not sure if he wants to work under Jones, or would have the control he had in Denver...but would make a pile of dough.

Why's that? I'm not disagreeing with you, just curious as to you rationale.

Mike Martz is available.

Oh god, please...no.

As for Garrett, I think his reputation is largely one manufactured by the media. Very little experience and relatively little success.

John Clayton suggests Cowher would be a good fit.

Since he's the reason I became a closet Steelers fan, I have to agree.

ESPN's Bill Williamson says the Bronco's job is by far the best one available.

I would think a few teams may be looking at him now that he's available. New rule for NFL coaches...you're team better not lose a Division lead late in the season or you're fired no matter what your track record.
That just made my day. It's time for a change. Worst defensive output I've seen in quite a while. Brutal choice in coordinator, and only one playoff win since Elway. It's time for change.

EDIT: I should reiterate what I've said since it's put out a bit harsh. I will miss Shanny, he's a great coach and been around for a long time which proves something. Got us our first super bowl win, got us a franchise QB and now some offensive weapons. Past few years he hasn't had the team that could be super bowl worthy oru D has went from good to disgusting very quickly, making it very difficult to be successful, and that's like what brought him to this day. Change is needed to try to find improvement. Where ever he goes, the team that picks him up will be getting a great football coach.

Just read the article about Ryan winning ROY. Surprised and pleased to see that Clady was actually 3rd in voting. In a class that deep, it says a lot when a LT is recognized in that way.

Best Broncos first round pick in years.

Glad to see your edit jobo...I almost posted about your good riddance comment, but held off.

In the end, I think Mike needs a change too.

Cowher not going to Cleveland or New York.

Hmmm....earlier today it was reported New York was talking to him, Shanahan gets canned and Cowher bows out?

Further, although idle speculation, Holmgren's last press conference in SEA today had him leave the door open, especially for an opportunity which would allow him to have off field control as he had in SEA up until 4 years ago.

The writer speculates also that who knows, given the current GM Tim Ruskell's lack of doing anything much more eath shaterring then Holmgren did in the role, next year is his last year in the current contract, and if things don't improve over this year, and this year's injuries masked a declining talent pool that's not being replensihed quickly enough, maybe Holmgren will be back in SEA.

Likely not going to play out that way unfortunatley as a Seahawk fan,so as I said earlier, I think if the right opportunity comes around this year which allows him total control (NYJ/SF/DAL/DEN) of a franchise, he's got enough of an itch not to say no...although again, as reflective as he's been about family and the past in the last few weeks of this year, I genuinely thought a year off was in the books.

A couple of interesting updates (or opinions) from Bill Williamson on the Denver opening...

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcwest/0...f-coaches.html

In this one, he says Bowlen can hire any coach or GM he wants that is available. Another person who suggests there is no better NFL job available right now.

But the interesting stuff can be found here...

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcwest/0...e-of-jobs.html

Meanwhile, it is being reported that Shanahan's refusal to fire defensive coordinator Bob Slowik led to Denver owner Pat Bowlen firing him Tuesday afternoon. More details could come out Wednesday when both Bowlen and Shanahan address the media.
Sounds to me like Mike was making a stand and accepting the blame himself, refusing to throw another guy (and someone he's extremely close to) under the bus. Admirable. Also could indicate that he was ready for a change and just gave Bowlen the reason to do it.

Kansas City and Dallas are both intriguing, but I don't think he gets the control in Dallas he would in KC. He has a great respect for the Chiefs and their fans. I can see that happening and quickly.

124 was reporting before 10am MST yesterday that Cowher was not taking the New York job. So unless Cowher was tipped off before the media I think it is just a coincidence. Or maybe Bolin talked to Cowher before his meeting with Shanahan to slow him down from signing with another team.

I think Cowher is playing the waiting game. He is the most sought after coach on the market, or at least he was until Shanahan's firing. I think he is looking for the perfect opportunity with a good team in place. Along with a huge pay day. One would think that the Broncos would be a good fit if that defense could be fixed. I think the Lions are not even in the running. A bad organization like that can ruin a good coach's reputation in a hurry.

I kind of wonder what Clark Hunt and the Chiefs are doing. Not much is being reported, which could mean they are sitting on their hands. Or that they are doing a lot of behind the scenes negotiations. I kind of have a hunch that us Chiefs fans are in for a big surprise.

I think Holmgren sits out for a little while. He has been planning this for a while, and now with Shanahan available a "big name" coach is available to have money thrown at him.

Although how much money is Shanahan still owed? Sitting on your butt collecting the big paycheque probably sounds pretty appealing after what he just went through.

$23,000,000. He may just take a year off. I know I would. Allthough a lot of coaches are workaholics.

I liked Mooch when he coached SF. He was a pretty conservative coach so it would be interesting change after Shanahan.
