Good call on Carlson. That kid looks like he's going to be good for a long time.

Just heard on Sirius 124....Shanahan fired in Denver.
Here is your link http://blogs.nfl.com/2008/12/30/bron...oach-shanahan/
I would think a few teams may be looking at him now that he's available. New rule for NFL coaches...you're team better not lose a Division lead late in the season or you're fired no matter what your track record.

Unless he's already cryogenically frozen for the offseason, Al Davis is celebrating.

Gary Kubiak would be my first choice, but he's occupied.
Seriously did not even think this was a remote possibility.

Kirwan's source claimed 3 years and 20 million or so left on Shanahan's contract. That would be a pretty expensive fire, too costly going into what looks to be the next great depression for this to be a knee jerk reaction I'd think. I thought that the team was sort of rebuilding and looked like they had the pieces in place to have a dynamic offence but for sure needed to revamp the defence. I'm pretty surprised about this myself.

Great, another coaching vacancy to steal potential candidates away from the Chiefs. Unless Hunt does the unthinkable and retains Herm Edwards.
How long till we hear the Shanahan to New York rumors? Obviously the Browns would add him to their long list of candidates.

Can't even read the story on denverbroncos.com because there are too many connections.
 LOL.

Undoubtedly, the biggest sporst news in Denver since Elway retired.

I didn't see it coming but I'm not that surprised. He was wearing too many hats. In the NFL its "what have you done for me lately?".

Defense has been horrible three years running. Shanahan has personel control.

I can understand it.

It's just extremely important to hire the right guy. This could go south in a hurry if they don't.

I think some of it might go back to the Ted Sundquist firing. He was a very well respected GM and was let go because he and Shanahan had conflicts.

As a Raiders fan, we know this is crucial.

I don't have a basis for this at all, but I think Spagnola, the defensive coordinator from the Giants, might be the top of the list for a lot of teams and would be a fresh face/solid approach to fixing the problems on defense.

I wonder if Shanahan will land on his feet elsewhere... it's kinda hard to see him in anything other than Broncos swag though.

His name is mentioned constantly with every coaching vacancy.

Indeed. I wasnt breaking new ground with that comment.
I think the Broncos opening might be a little different than offers in the past. In fact, there are two very appealing openings available with Mangini being let go by Jets. Neither team is that far away from being a playoff contender and neither is a rebuilding project (although the Broncos D certainly is).

The Chiefs (assumingly), Browns, Raiders, Lions, Rams (assumingly) are all long-term, painful projects, whereas the Jets and Broncos are close.

Call me crazy, but I don't want a first time head coach, no matter who he is.
 9/10 it's disaster.

You want Brad Childress?
Ya?
That can be arranged....take Darrel Bevel too.

What, you'll trade us some draft picks as compensation? Ohhh you shouldn't have!! |

I understand, but there are quite a few retreads around the league that keep getting jobs.

When it comes to the Raiders I don't think they have much of a choice. Who wants to put up with Skeletor?

So true. It's a horrible thing right now. At least with all other reclamation projects around the NFL, ownership support and franchise integrity are at least somewhat present. Who wants to sign up to be apart of the dysfunction that is the Raiders?

Although, Lane Kiffen, Norv Turner, Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden, etc... have all done quite well for themselves after rocky endings to their tenure with the Raiders. At the end of the day, it's a head coaching position with an NFL franchise; a sought after spot that can, at the very least, be used as a stepping stone.
