Question How do I get AVI files on an ipod?

I got my daughter a nano for Christmas and have a few avi formatted videos that I would like to upload onto it.

I have not been able to find any decent freeware that converts avi to mov or mp4 format.

Can anyone out there point me in the right direction?

Thanks

x3...I have handbrake running a convert on 8 DVD rips right now. The newest version has a lot of nice features, such as the decomb filter, that will automatically deinterlace vids as needed, rather than having you figure out on a video by video basis if you need it. (turn on the decomb filter each time, no more guesswork or eyeballing every video)

Encoding quality is also improved over previous versions overall, with better presets out of the box
