I've always gotten good rates, and very good service from Meloche Monnex.
They were extremely helpful after an idiot on a cellphone ran into me at a red light and destroyed my freshly paid for car.

I wonder how many provinces have public insurance. I know we (MB) do.
Anyhoo.

Last time this came up on CP I was sent to Sun Valley Insurance (by the Husky near Father Weillasomething in Sundance) and was very impressed. It was my first insurance policy on my first vehicle and I ended up paying $600 a year.

$600 a year? I have pretty minimal coverage and pay much more than that. I would guess you just have third party liability, but how much?

They don't have to pay any broker commissions so they are generally 10-20% lower than much of the other insurers in Alberta if you have a good driving record. If you haven't been driving for 3 or more years they aren't as competitive. Good marketers also. Owned by Canadian Western Bank. TD owns Melloche Monnex and their rates are quite decent also.

My truck is a 98 with 180,000 on it so there is no collision. If I am at fault for an accident there is no help for me. But I am covered up to $2,000,000 for the other guy. I think thats a pretty good deal.
Also, I checked my recipts and I paid exactly $670 for the full year.

BC, Sask and Man are the only provinces with provincial insurance.

Just my 2¢ for this thread:
Meloche Monnex is cheap, but they require you to be a professional to get their rates. Don't exagerate and tell them something that you are not.
I've only had to use insurnace a couple of times, but I also now look at the service. When your life has been turned upside down by something serious happening, the last thing you want is your life on hold because you wanted to save $5 per month.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I won't have a chance to actually shop around until at least Thursday probably, so keep the advice flowing.
