That's the thing... it wasn't a straight forward comedy, although it does seem like it was advertised as one.
The plot about how the community was suffering and found something to bring them together, was much more central to the movie. It had its whacky elements, but it was a mood driven movie more than most comedies these days - as you would expect from the people who made the movie.

I thought it completely fell apart. The whole premise just didn't work. The sweded videos just weren't funny at all. The youtube generation has much better things. I thought it was one of the worst movies I have ever watched since looking forward to it from the hype and commercials with some of my favorite movies like ghostbusters and robocop. It ended up to be terrible and depressing. The whole community storyline seemed like it tried too hard to tack on a feel good substance to it that ultimately rang very fake. I was bored to tears and it was pretty excruciating sitting through the movie. Like the other guy, I zoned out a lot because it was so predictable and couldn't sell me on it's plot. I just didn't buy it.

I was sitting in the front row at chinook thanks to my idiot friend and I was baked out of my mind and I thought it was thoroughly disappointing. Funny at some parts, but overall a typical Jack Black movie.

Rented it a little while back and thought it was absolute garbage. I think it generated one or two weak chuckles out of me, I didn't find it funny at all.
Would appear as though I am in the minority though...

My central complaints are a) Jack Blacks character is way too much of an @sshole to be likeable, and b) Mos Def is much better used playing fun upbeat characters than slightly sad-sack dumb guys.
Pretty decent overall however

As far as I know, there's just a regular single-disc release. Nothing fancy.

Damn, January of 2008 felt like it was a decade ago.
And I guess, I was a bit overzealous with the phenomenal comment. But it does look like a great movie and thanks once again for the refresher.

Ok, someone owes me 2 hours of my life I'll never get back. I'm all about stupid movies (Kung pow, supert troopers, etc), and this one was horrible. I watched the whole thing hoping that something great would happen. No dice.

wasn't a fan... The only positive thing was it wasted 2 hours of a 5 hour flight to Hawaii.

The most disappointing thing is that it wasn't able to live up to its brimming potential. There are so many good ingredients here: a great premise, an able and creative director, and suitable talent in Black (who can do caustic cornball humor like no other - I felt he had no edge here)Mos Def, who is mos def ver goo, but also wasted here, and also Danny Glover, who is a seasoned, gifted actor. Where this movie failed most I think is that it sells comedy but gives you drama. For this to have lived up to its billing I think it would have done best to be very light and cheeky - which it is in parts but the humor seems out of context and clunky.
I wanted this to be fantastic so badly, and though it wasn't awful I felt let down and for some reason that's almost worse than if it would have just out and out sucked balls.
