Default INSERT key won't work

I run Vista. When I'm typing a Word document, when I hit my insert key to replace characters instead of having new characters just added into the document, it doesn't replace the characters. Am I missing something? Thank you to anyone who can answer this for me. I should mention that this happens in Word but insert works fine when I'm typing a post here.

Yes we do. I write a newspaper column and sometimes I just want to replace a couple of sentences and I just want to replace text as I go along.

Have you tried any other text programs? Like Notepad or Wordpad to see if it works in there?

Do you have a spare computer around? Can you swap the keyboards and see if it makes a difference?

Is the keyboard USB? If so, can you unplug it and plug it into a different USB port?

Can't unplug it. It's a laptop.
