Canada doesn't do so hot, well hell they sort of sucked in the rowing events which they are usually good at. Is it possible we are going to be stuck at 3 medals?

I'll second that. I stayed up until 1:30 last night to watch the extremely mediocre performance by the men's eights. I don't think we'll be stuck at 3, but it's starting to look like even 10 is unlikely. I can honestly say that there has not been a single 'proud to be Canadian' moment in the entire games.

Maybe the best thing for Canadian atheletes is for us to bomb and only win something like 5 medals and then maybe the government, corporations and general public will wakeup to fact that our atheletes need more financial help.
Can't really blame the atheletes for the results, they are trying their best with the support they were given.

Agreed.
Worst possible job of covering these games as was humanly possible.
here is a letter sent to the editor of the NY Post as published in todays edition...pretty much covers what most people are feeling down here.
August 22, 2004 -- * As usual, watching the Olympics is almost not worth the aggravation. With NBC playing unconscionable ratings stunts, I'm about ready to boycott the Games completely.
Watching Paul Hamm go for the gold should have been easy. Guess again! First, you have to avoid hearing the results, before the television broadcast: No television, no radio, no Internet. Second, you need to stay awake until midnight. Having seen Hamm muff his vault, and apparently ruin his chances, I (and I'm guessing many others), dragged myself to bed at 11:10 p.m. with two rotations to go — and missed the comeback! NBC knew how this was going to end, and they CHOSE to air the comeback well after the end of prime-time.
As far as I'm concerned, NBC screwed the working man Wednesday night. We missed history being made because they greedily tried to squeeze another 60 minutes out of us. No wonder ratings are down and no one goes to the Olympics anymore.

The irony of that letter is that Hamm only came back because the judges completely screwed the Korean gymnast out of the gold. If I was NBC, I'd probably wait until after prime time before showing my guy basically get cheated into the gold medal spot too.

My wife and I were talking about this last night....Coming from Canada, CBC lets you immerse yourself in the event from start to finish. I've found watching NBC is like watching ESPN, just the highlights and the leaders. Last night while watching diving, they focused on the two female American divers listening to their walkmans while other competitors were jumping! NBC has to be aware that you create drama when you show the ENITRE EVENT.
transplant99----Did you watch the opening ceremonies? The commentary was atrocious. Katie Couric was like a clueless tourist not understanding the full magnitude of what she was seeing, and Bob "short man syndrome" Costas commented on every bad atrocity that had ever happened to the country as they filed into the stadium. And while Bjork sang a great song with a very nice visual show, Costas had to blab all over it.....I can understand homerism....NBC is America! But compared to other national telecasts, like CBC and I can imagine BBC, they show that there is other athletes and believe it or not other countries involved in the Olympics.
I wish I could find it, but there was a cartoon years ago that had the other Gumbel holding a microphone reporting a breaking story from that year's Olympics....The quote....
"This just in, NBC has learned there are other countries competing in this years events."

I watched until the Canadians entered the venue...then i turned it off.

Yup...i can watch it with Spanish commentary.

Yeah, NBC is a complete joke.
My wife was all pumped to watch women's gymnastics, so they started showing some, then went to swimming, then back to gymanstics, etc, etc, etc.
I thought for sure she was going to throw a remote control or brick or something at the TV. Very frustrating for her.
And yes, Canada really sucks this year. CBC has better coverage, too bad our country is doing so badly.
On a side note, is anyone else really into watching the beach volleyball? I'ts probably been my favourite to watch. Great crowds, nice venue, music, noise. I've been surprised at myself at how much I like watching it.
And why is table tennis an Olympic sport???????

Brian Williams was just saying it was also the system to blame. - until we develop a better system to identify and nurture talent throwing money at it wouldn't necessarily fix the problem.
Makes sense. I say we just find out what the heck Australia is doing and copy it. Mind you they don't really do much for the Winter Olympics and that automatically doubles funding but still, we should at least be able to beat countries like Soviet Georgia and Thailand for medals, which we're currently not doing,

After watching Canada do so well in Salt Lake, it's just not as fun watching our miss and underachieve.
