I thought Iceland was green and Greenland was ice? This is what I learned from Emilio Estevez and the Mighty Ducks....

I saw maybe 10 plows going from Chestermere to Chinook back to Chestermere last night, 11 if I include the Chestermere that drove by my house like 3 times. So they were out, but they sure weren't plowing the roads I was on, Paigan, Blackfoot, 17th Ave... The back road I had to take to get around the accident was in better shape than Backfoot!

I hope you didn't go home to Chestermere on 17th Ave from Blackfoot.
Deerfoot to 16th was waaaay faster. And that little shortcut around Blackfoot worked pretty well too.

Yeah was on 17th Ave, got stopped about 1km outside Chestermere for an accident.. sat there for about 40 minutes before finally finding a back road to 16th.

Left the office downtown at 4:00 pm last night. Got home at 7:38. Calgary Transit was, according to my driver, about 1 hr and 20 min behind most of the afternoon. Awesome. At least I had the foresight to load the iPod with podcasts before I left (Adam Carolla Show).
The worst part was walking from my bus stop to my house. I was not dressed for the weather (stupid dress code at work) and no one had shoveled their walks. I had to walk in the middle of the street where the snow was the lightest and it was still over my ankles. Probably wrecked my dress shoes. Frig.
This morning I had to dig out our car so my wife could go to work. The driveway had a good half a foot or more on it thanks to the drifts. All that work was almost all for naught because the cul de sac was just as deep and completely unplowed. She was lucky to make it out of the neighborhood this morning and I was on pins and needles until she called, safe and sound, after making it to work okay.

We live on a circle and it is in horrible condition because of all the snowfall. I felt much better this morning when the wife called to say she arrived at work safe and sound.

Honestly, it's pretty rough on side streets, and it's cold, but main roads aren't too too bad. Just be careful but don't be too timid. Show confidence and drive like you can!

My gf tried to get some winter tires on her car like last week or so.. and the dude said that Quebec had instituted this mandatory winter tires thing and thus there is a severe shortage in the country. Anyone else hear about this?
She asked when she could order some for and the guy said the next time possible time was February............ wdf? that's over 6 weeks away!

Seriously, what is with you lazy f'rs that don't bother brushing the snow off your cars? I can understand minivans and bigger suvs, but cars? Come on! I see you fools driving around with just your front wipers having cleared a swath on the windshield, and then a mountain of snow on the roof and the back window totally covered. Not only are you stupid because you can't see out your back window, you're also pretty inconsiderate because all that snow slowly blows off your roof and creates a big snow cloud behind you that the guy following gets partially blinded by.
Lazy SOBs.

Yep, he is quite right. Sure a few people have mentioned it but during the snowy months (nov-march or something like that) you are required to have them on your car or your get a ticket and your insurer may not pay out a claim.
I just finished tuning up my snowmobile. Got the thing running like a top now and it's sitting in my garage. It's taking all my will power not to jump on the thing and start ripping up and down the streets in my condo complex. Oh man that would be a fun way to kill the afternoon.

For two days a year Calgary does an excellant job. In fact this storm they were out in advance according to the city spraying deicer. I was on deerfoot and it didn't seem that icy. I think people were being overly cautious as they get used to the conditions.
I don't have winter tires and don't believe in them. They only time I had problems and almost go stuck was right in front of my house getting on to my drive way but I got out with some careful driving.
The real problem is people don't know how to drive in snow. Every 2nd car slams the gas down and spins there wheels until they dig a hole in the snow and it freezes over with ice. DONT SPIN YOUR TIRES, it is very simple. force your car into a higher gear and press the gas lightly to accelerate. if your tires start to spin release the gas a bit. It simple to do but half the people don't understand this.

I left my house by Heritage Station at 2:20pm yesterday and arrived downtown at the Hyatt at 4:45. It took almost a full half hour to go one block on 6th ave between 1st and center.
Then I had to go home again (found a decent route and made it in 50 minutes), change my clothes, and go BACK downtown (another half hour), play a christmas party, and then drive home (another half hour). Then my car got stuck in the alley trying to get into the garage and it took me 20 minutes to dig it out and get it somewhere near the side of the road so I could just go to frickin bed.

I don't believe in wearing pants in public but that doesn't mean that it's not a good idea to wear pants in public.

I think Germany has it right. They also have a winter tire law. And if you are involved in an accident, and the police see that you are running all seasons instead of the required winter tires, not only will you receive a ticket, you will also be automatically deemed "at fault" in the accident.
