I became a fan of the NFL when I happened to watch a Steelers AFC Wild Card game in 1989. I don't remember a thing about the game except for the fact that the announcers talked about how Bubby Brister (the Steelers QB) basically put the team on his back and willed them to victory. I thought that was the coolest thing ever and I was pretty much hooked (although I ended up cheering for the Dolphins and Dan Marino the next season and eventually Mark Rypien and the Redskins when they went to the Super Bowl in 1992)...

Flames fan when the team moved here. Didn't know much about them being a young guy. Went to the first game at the corral, checked the program and decided Eric Vail would be my favorite player because he scored the most points. Cheered for Montreal before that.

Blue Jay fan because they were "Canadian". Cheered for the Expos also, but in about 1983-1985 the Jays took over for me. I really liked the teams then. I think I could still name the starting 9 off the top of my head: Alfredo Griffin, Damaso Garcia, Moseby, Barfield, Bell, etc.

Never liked basketball much. You'd have to pay me to watch a whole game. Watched maybe 3 full games in my life, all when Carter was with the raptors.

NFL: Way back when I started cheering for the Cowboys because I liked the star on their helmet! I was pretty young. Staubach days. Favorite player was the running back...wow name escapes me now...huge star, help me. DORSETT! I am getting old.
Then I liked New Orleans and New England because they were awful. Cheering for the underdogs. Then the Lions and Barry Sanders came along.
So now I am just a casual fan of the NFL, but will cheer for the Cowboys, Patriots, Saints and Lions when pressed. Soft spot for the Seahawks because they used to be the game on all the time.

CFL: Stamps of course because I was born here. In the East I like the Ti-Cats. DiPietro and Rufus Crawford! Great players.

Got to Calgary the day they were announcing the acquisition of the Atlanta Flames. Of course being a young and impressionable tiny tyke I was enthralled with hockey and the Flames from day one.

I remember guys like Rejean, Konroyd, Willi, Pepper, Nilson. Watching games at the old Corral. I was a kid in the candy store in those early years. I wore my red Lanny 'stache everyday to school during the '86 run. Used to always head to the SportChek over by sunridge mall for autograph sessions. I had tonnnes of signitures. I always loved the Flames cook book and the story that Perry Berezan told about the egg in the microwave...always made me laugh.

Have a big love in for the Philidelphia Eagles (love my NFL). Have Since Seth Joyner, Andre, Muddy Waters and Reggie White patrolled the field. I miss my Buddy Ball. Just saw them in Seattle last month it was AWESOME! Apparently a good football game took place as well.

Jays fan. Mother is a baseball nut so she got me into them. Althoguh I did love the Expo teams of the '80's. The Rock, Hawk,Big Cat, El Presidente and Carter were awesome. Even Tim Wallach. Still love to watch and play ball.

I have always followed the Stamps but I was never a big CFL fan. I had Bruce Coverington living next door to mo for awhile when I was in school and SAIT. That was cool because he awesome BBQ's and always asked me to tag along when he and his roommates went out. Garcia lived there for awhile after Bruce moved out but I had left home by then. Mom always thought he was a bit of a nancy boy and was surprised he played ball. I always liked him though as he was a hell of a nice guy.

I was your prototypical Bulls fan of the late 80's early 90's. I now hide my head in shame over the fact I once gave up hockey to play basketball. I love basketball as a sport but loathe the NBA.............

I became a Riders fan the minute I was born in Regina.

EDIT: In fact I think I was probably a fan the moment I was conceived. Thus making me a fan while still in the womb.

Ah, that must be why so many Riders fans spend a great deal of time in the fetal position!

I started to become a Flames fan around 2002 when Iginla really started to become the player he currently is and the team started to show signs of life. I moved to Calgary in 1995 so as you can probably understand I wasnt really motivated to be a Flames fan during my younger years. I was actually a Coyotes fan, cant really remember why. I do remember I liked the Oilers (runs and hides) because CUJO was there and he was my favorite player. I pretty much cheered for wherever he was until I started cheering for the flames

Calgary Flames when they won the cup, I never followed sports before then, and I assumed the team that won the league must be the best team. Therefore I started blindly cheering for them.

Calgary Stampeders, I was a Flames fan, why not cheer for their CFL team too?

Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, hometown team, not much more than that

Manchester United, not really sure how, somehow evolved to be a Man U fan

Texas Rangers, I was a Nolan Ryan fan when I was a kid, and he was the best!

Devils... when I realized their logo was the easiest one to draw, getting me an A on my Grade 8 drafting assignment (we made silk-screened T-shirts).

Argos... when I visited Toronto and saw that the door entrance to their fan club area at Exhibition Stadium had footballs for doorknobs. At 11 years old, I thought that was cool.

Patriots... when New England games were the only NFL football games played on my TV in Halifax. (Though, like some others here, I followed Flutie also...)

Flames fan
My brother had a big Kent Nilsson poster that use to hang on his wall, he cheered on the Flames (possible as an anti Gretzky thing) and the day Lanny McDonald, my favourite player, was traded to the Flames from that second on it's been nothing but.

Miami Dolphins
After years of watching CFL house league football, one day I watched a Dolphins game during Dan Marino's historic 1984 season. He hook me instantly and have loved watching the Dolphins ever since

I've been a Flames fan as long as I can remember. I was born and raised here, and my grandfather was a huge fan, so I remember watching games with him when I was little.

I became a Riders fan in about 1997, I think basically to cheer against my uncle and Grandma who were cheering for the Stamps in the west semi-final...from there I've just kept cheering for them.

I became a Yankees fan in 1996 when they traded for Tino Martinez, and have stayed a fan ever since.

I became a flames fan strictly because of my Father. He was a big Flames fan and basically spoiled me with a bunch of flames things (jerseys, hats, posters, etc.)

I became a 49ers fan, then eagles fan, now a cowboys fan. I typically become a fan of a team because of 1 player. For NFL it is T.O.

Favorite NBA team would be Miami only because of Wade with Toronto a close 2nd because they are Canadian.

Stamps... because they are local
Roughnecks...because they are local

I became a Flames fan in 83. I picked them cause I thought their symbol was cool, I was 8. I cut the backs of the Kraft Dinner boxes cause they were hockey cards and that's how I learned the players. Became a Niners fan in 84. No specific reason, I just decided to get into football. Hate baseball, too slow and boring. Not into basketball, too many points and too boring. I support England in the world cup and I am a half assed Man U fan.

I was too young to remember when I became a fan. But I became a huge fan in the late 90s when the Flames really sucked because I love underdogs. Unlike most people I tend to become a fan of teams that are horrible rather than picking up a team that goes on a sick playoff run.

I first became a Flames fan a couple weeks ago, when I found out Bertuzzi plays for them.

Became a Senators fan as soon as it was announced that they were granted an expansion franchise. Huge surprise that they were awarded the team because all the mediots gave them no chance.

Became a Miami Dolphins fan because the woman had a cottage two down from my family cottage was from South Florida and she was the only person I knew who lived near an NFL team.

Became a Toronto Blue Jays fan because I had an uncle, aunt and cousins that lived in Toronto.
