This is a good time to remind people to have an emergency plan for your car. Many of us have garages and don't think anything of wearing just a medium jacket on that 30 seconds walk to and from the car. Be sure to have a few extra layers of clothing in the car, a few candles and a lighter (you'd be amazed how much warmth 1 candle gives in a freezing car), energy or candy bars, bottles of water (most will have room to expand for freezing), boots if you normally don't wear boots, hats, mitts, etc.

Several years ago I was in a situation where I had heated parking at home, and could warm up my car at work before leaving. I ended up getting stranded outside in -35 weather (Winnipeg) wearing just a suit with a suit jacket. I was so cold by the time I got home that I went to take a bath to warm up, and the cold water coming out of the tap felt like it was burning me.

I can't think of a better time to be driving into Calgary after being gone 4 months.

In a similar vein to the survival post above, I read an interesting article about getting stranded in the winter that said if you are going to be stranded for any extended length of time outside the city, to burn your spare tire for heat and as a smoke signal. From the article, the tire will apparently burn for a really long time and isn't terribly toxic.

This obviously applies to being stuck deep in the mountains, not in the ditch in suburban Calgary...

I recall hearing a story of a guy who kept his family alive by burning the tires. Unfortunately he died looking for help while his family was rescued. But the thing that I wondered, then and now, is how do you go about lighting a tire? I would think that they would take some serious heat to get started, and if you are capable of building a wood fire that hot, why do you need to burn the tire?

Or am I way off base in how combustable tires are? I know once they start burning they burn for a long time- anybody who watches the Simpsons knows that. I just thought it would take a lot to get it started.

Just drove home from the beltline to Signal Hill, not fun out there.

A few cars were not making it up the hill (17th Ave just west of Sarcee Trail).

I drove from the University to Signal Hill and not only did it take 5 times longer than usual, but yes, some cars weren't really making it up the hill.

I dont think so, but I remember a Flames game in NJ in the late 80s that had something like 1000 people at it due to the weather. It was called by wailin' Ed on 2&7!

Just looking at the traffic cameras on the city of Calgary site, I don't know how I'm going to get home.

I was just out driving, I'd recommend allowing AT LEAST double your usual driving time to get home.

I didn't have to go far, would normally have been at 20 minute round trip at 3 pm, took me an hour.

I was just thinking about when that Colorado game was cancelled in 2006 because of bad weather. I'll be there no matter the weather but didn't want to go and have to turn back around.
