Default I Became A Fan of ....... when.....

I've found that people on this board cheer for all sorts of teams for all sorts of reasons.

When did you support your team? Was it passed down, is the team in the city you live in, it is culture, was it a specific moment?

---

I became a Flames fan during the 89 cup run. I had not watched much before than but Game 7 of Vancouver series was probably the first time I 'felt' fear. The Flames won the Stanley Cup the day before my 10th birthday.

I became a Brazil soccer fan because it was passed down by my dad. He grew up in Singapore and watched Brazil during the glory years of Pele and 3 World Cup titles. He was crushed when they lost in 1982, there's even a story told by my mom that he was so mad that he nudged me off the couch! (I was 3). I enjoyed the two latter Brazil World Cup titles in 94 and 2002.

I'm not a huge baseball fan but I became a Dodgers fan when they won the World Series in 1988. My brother is a big Blue Jays fan and HATED the As so we cheered for the Dodgers that year and it stuck with me more than him.

I became a Patriots fan because of the wonderful run they had in 2001 beating the Rams in the Super Bowl and of course because of Tom Brady.
The snowbowl game, as controversial was it was, it still my favourite game ever.

---

What's your story?

What's your story?
X2 Minus the Tom Brady reason

Flames was because I was born in Calgary and my parents are big Flames fans.

Jays just because they are canadian.

Other than that I dont really know, just like certain teams over others.

I became a Flames fan in Nov 2006-ish. I don't know why, but for some reason, I came across a hockey game while channel surfing, and Rick Tabaracci just made a pretty nice save. So, I stuck on the channel, and a couple minutes later, Theo Fleury did his patented off-wing shot between the defenders legs, had another goal that game, and the Flames won 7-2 vs Pheonix. I thought "damn, this team is pretty good." The Flames won the next 2 games (I believe) pretty much by a blowout, and I got hooked and thought this was a awsome team. I believe one of those was the Todd Simpson knee-on-knee with Peter Forsberg, and I guess being a company-man, the critisism helped me align with the Calgary team even more. The Flames then went on to lose the next 7 games, miss the playoffs (1997) and miss the playoffs for the next 6 seasons as well.

i became a fan of the Flames (and hockey for that matter) because my wife is Canadian and made me ...... but really she took me too my first NHL game 2 yrs ago. It was a NYE Battle of ALberta. The reason i didnt like hockey is because i didnt understand the rules but the guy next to us explained them to me at the game. I fell in love with the game, the becoming a flames happened a few days later when i met Jarome Iginla and he had a conversation with me. He took time to talk to me ( he even remember me the next year when i met him outside the dome waiting for autographs, he remembered the OKlahoma accent).....

That impressed me because at that time in Oklahoma, we had the New Orleans Hornets basketball team and they would cross the street to not have to talk to you or sign stuff.Thats why i started cheering for the Flameys

- I became a fan of the Bills when Flutie went south. Then the Chargers, Pats, etc.
- Also a 9ers fan for Garcia, then Eagles etc.
- Packers fan because of Favre, now a Jets fan for the same reason.
- Suns fan because of Nash.

Other than CFL/NHL, which are sports that I can watch no matter who's playing, I pretty much have to have reason for watching them. Up until Flutie went to Buffalo, I hated the NFL (for instance).

Although, I do really like Basketball. I just don't have a lot of time to watch all the games so I try to just focus on the Suns.

I became a fan of the Eagles when I was in Philadelphia doing some charity work. I was 14 at the time and the mayor and the team put me up in the mayor's box at for a preseason game against the Jets. They also took me down to the field to meet Donovan McNabb, Corey Simon and Harold Carmichael. Very classy organization.

I cant say I specifically remember when I became a Flames fan. I remember bits and pieces of the 88-89 run. Specifically I remember being 8 at the time and sneaking downstairs well after my bed time to watch the flames v kings series
My grandpa had season tickets at the time on the blue line first row where the fancy club seats are these days. Had Calgary/Montreal gone to a game 7 I would have been there, I wish I still had the tickets for that game.
Basically some of my earlest memories are of the 88-89 run, but I had a pretty good scrap book of flames clippings growing up that started before the run, so maybe it was the beginning of the season...maybe even the season before that but Im not entirely sure

as for when I became a fan of other sports teams?
well.....

if its not hockey, its not worth watching

That's another thing I'm curious about, the college sport culture in the US.
Do you HAVE to be a fan of the school you go/went to?

I think most of the people on this board went to U of Calgary and could careless about the Dinos.

I became a fan of hockey in the mid 90s. My brothers were always talking about it and watching it, hogging the tv for the games, so I figured I would look into it.

I became a hardcore fan of hockey after going to my first game in 2000.

I became a Sens fan because I was born in Ottawa, I live in Ottawa, I love Ottawa and because I really, really hated Toronto.

I became a fan of the Flames out West because I always remember my uncle talking about them when I was little. He was a big fan of them. So, I started following them as best I could out here. Then I heard of a young man named Robyn Regehr...

I'd say around 87-88. Before that I really wasnt a fan of teams and just liked certain players. What made me a fan is during the playoffs my parents who werent fans but would always pull for the Flames against whoever they played and ironically cheer against the Oilers. I guess eventually the Flames just became my team and it's been like that since and wont ever change.

I bet a kid on the school bus a quarter that the 49ers were going to win the Superbowl. That was in 1982 and really the first time I had paid attention. The 49ers have given me a lot to cheer about over the years, even if the last while has been pretty bleak.

As for hockey, I've just been a fan since I can remember. The Flames now because when I moved here I was able to actually get tickets and see games live. That was pretty different than SW Ont where Leafs tickets have always been impossible to get. So as I got to know the team better it became the team I rooted for, then got seasons tickets for (during the dark years).

Baseball, I remember being home sick and discovering there was a baseball game on TV in the afternoon - it was the Jays first game ever. I've always been a fan of the Jays, even if I am a disappointed that they are in the toughest division in baseball to compete.

I was born in Calgary with my dad being a huge fan, so in a sense it was passed down. That being said I have an older brother who is a diehard Oilers fan so who knows how that worked. I do know it made it interesting during the 80's and definately where my deep hatred of the Oilers is spawned from. Earliest memories are probably from the 86 run.

I have cheered for the Detroit Lions since the year after Sanders was drafted back in '89. I remember when Techmo Super Bowl came out on the NES and I was so happy to be able to be the lions since they didn't make the grade in the first Techmo Bowl. Still a lions fan to this day even though its almost been 10 years since Sanders left the organization. I guess I'm a sucker for punishment but when you have followed a team for almost 20 years its hard to get rid of that baggage.

Hate baseball, so I have no team.

For the other sports I'll usually cheer for the token Canadian on their roster (Nash in Phx, Hargreaves in ManU)

I became a Boston Red Sox fan in 1998 when the Montreal Expos (previous favourite team) traded my favourite player Pedro Martinez. Since then the Sox have become my favourite SPORTS team period. I also love cheering for the underdog and i HATE the yankees and at the time we all know how long it was that they hadnt won a series...

Became a New England Patriots fan in 1999 simply because i decided i was going to take an interest in the NFL and decided to stick with the city of Boston (see above) I was also lucky enough to see the 16-0 game against the Giants last year I was in montreal and drove down to New York to take in the game. Best sports moment of my life

Became a flames from birth based on location and family. Really became an avid fan in the mid to early 90's becasue of mr. Fleury.

Not a big NBA fan but do really enjoy the game and my team.... you guessed it... the Boston Celtics... since 2000. I was a really big fan of Antoine Walker still am despite is career tailspin now in memphis.

Also i am 20... so this could explain the dates

Im very lucky to have witnessed 3 out of my 4 teams win a championship.... heres hoping i get to see the flames do it b4 my demise.

I became a fan of the NY Yankees, and basically baseball in general, two seasons ago. I always hated the Blue Jays, but when A-Rod yelled at John McDonald (or was it someone else?) causing him to drop the ball, for some reason I became an A-Rod and a Yankees fan at that moment. I've enjoyed watching them these past two and a half years since.

I had no idea. How did I miss that with you being a regular poster in the NFL thread?

I became a Flames fan when they moved to Calgary when I was 7. All the commotion about having an NHL team really got me excited as a young kid just starting to play minor hockey.

I became a Chiefs fan when I attended my first game at Arrowhead Stadium in 1992. I was completely blown away by the whole experience from the tail gaiting to the roar of 80,000 fans. I have been back to Arrowhead 6 times since then and watched the Chiefs play on the road as well.

I became a Yankees fan in Jr. High in the mid 80's. I saw something about Babe Ruth on TV and my curiosity was peaked so I found an autobiography of him in the school library. After that I read the autobiography of Lou Gehrig, since he was mentioned in the Babe Ruth autobiography. Then the Joe DiMaggio and Micky Mantle autobiography's. In the 1980's the Yankees stunk, I would get excited if they pulled into third place in the American League East in July for 2 days.
