Same here. I'm not going to draft anything I don't own and haven't listened to an eff ton.

I love seeing picks I've never heard of, so I'm trying to avoid the obvious a little bit. (Yeah, yeah, I know I drafted Murmur )

What got into John Mayer? Sometime after the release of his 2003 sophomore album, Heavier Things, a perfectly pleasant affair that expanded on the dreamy, mellow adult pop of his breakthrough hit, "Your Body Is a Wonderland," he decided that he just didn't want to follow that direction anymore. He started penning a monthly column for Esquire magazine, within which he hinted that his musical tastes were far broader than his recordings suggested, and then he started cameoing all over the place, appearing on albums by Buddy Guy, Herbie Hancock, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and John Scofield — heavy hitters one and all, yet none of them seemed to have much to do with Mayer's music, at least on the surface. These veterans recognized something within Mayer's playing, but more importantly, he realized that he needed to push himself further and decided to expand his horizons by seizing the opportunity to play with these masters and then incorporating what he learned into his own music. He toured as a power trio with studio pros Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino and recorded the live album Try! while on the road. There are no two ways about it: anybody who dismissed Mayer as a lite Dave Matthews wannabe based on his first two records will be forced to reassess him on the basis of this excellent record. While he still has some vocal tics that bring to mind Matthews and certainly shares an affection for lengthy live jams, Mayer has developed serious chops that transcend boilerplate jam band rock, where the groove and feel is more important than what's played. Here, Mayer is pushed by Jordan and Palladino — and he pays back the favor by giving them equal billing on the album's front cover, which is unusual for any pop/rock star of his popularity (the cover also marks the second Blue Note allusion in Mayer's oeuvre, which is surely not a coincidence) — and he rises to the challenge with muscular playing that's his best playing on record. Not just that, but there's a palpable grit to Try! — and a sultry smoothness to the mellow numbers — unheard on his previous studio albums. That alone would make Try! not just noteworthy, but a step forward for Mayer. But what makes it more remarkable is that Mayer takes an even greater risk by relying on new material for this album. There are two older songs — "Something's Missing" and the hit "Daughters," both from Heavier Things — but the rest consists of covers of Jimi Hendrix and Ray Charles ("Wait Until Tomorrow" and "I Got a Woman," respectively) and new songs that showcase Mayer's earthier, blues-rock direction. Although he sometimes dips into blues-rock clichés — particularly on the slow-crawling "Out of My Mind" — it's only on occasion (and when he does tread that familiar ground, he does so with conviction), and the songs overall are his strongest, most ambitious set of tunes yet. And that's what's most impressive about Try! — Mayer has expanded what he can do as a musician and a writer and in the process has definitively separated himself from the pack of sensitive, jammy modern singer/songwriters. Based on this, he has more heart, soul, ambition, and chops than the rest of them combined.

Yeah, I know it's stylish for a lot of people to pile on John Mayer for being sappy and too popish, but I think many people just refuse to give the guy's music a chance. Granted there are some cheesy lyrics in his earlier work ("Your Body is a Wonderland", "Daughters"), but this live album and his latest album are quite a bit different and I would implore people to take a chance on them.

On Try, Mayer is at his best and blusiest. Being that it's a live album, we also get a chance to listen to more of his great guitar work in more of a jam environment. Session legends Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan provide terrific rythm to back up Mayer's excellent guitar skills. Mayer's vocals, sometimes too soft for his detractors, prove to be a powerful vehichle for the blues sound here.

"Try"

"Who Did You Think I Was"

"Another Kind of Green"

"Good Love Is on the Way"

Thanks. Honestly, I've had this album for a little over two or three years now and it still gets played a lot in the car. There's just not a weak song on the album aside from "Daughters".

I didn't realize it was cool to pile on Jon Mayer. I quite like his music, or at least the stuff that I have heard. I hadn't heard of this live one.

I think a lot of people just take issue with the fact that women find him attractive.

I've got a funny story that's kind of John Mayer related. Me and a few buddies were at his concert in Calgary two summers ago and had floor seats. I was single at the time and we were surrounded by incredibly gorgeous women. So what did we do? Why of course we proceeded to get beligerent drunk and yell at the stage. We'd wait for all of the women to stop screaming and then one of us would yell out in a high-pitched voice "OH MY GOD!!! IT'S JOHN MAYER!!!".

So then as we're leaving, not satisfied with the asses we'd already made of ourselves, my completely straight friend turns to me and says quite loudly "You'd [expletive] John Mayer! I know I would! Ben Harper too!"

EDIT: Maybe that's only funny to me and is a "you had to be there" kind of thing.

He keeps getting his picture taken with my girlfriend, even though I have asked him to leave Jen alone.

yeah, I hear and see it a lot and I've never really understood some musicians i know obsession to dog him as much as they do. I neither like him or dislike him, there's a lot of stuff that I think is really nice and some that don't float my boat but in the end I think I'm pretty ignorant with his music (meaning I know very little about it)... just haven't laid down the $$ to know more

But I do have to say this, I don't usually drool of relic style copies and such but this guitar right here is absolutely beautiful... I could listen to it talk all day long

Really? I honestly didn't think I would step on anyones toes in this draft. She's good though, I like her stuff a lot, even her stuff she did with her boyfriend in Moloko. It's just an interesting sound.

Quick pick before bed....

The British Invasion chooses under the Punk category:

Sound Affects
by
The Jam

Fantastic album by a great band.

Sound Affects is a 1980 album by British group The Jam. This release, their fifth album, is frequently considered the closing point of The Jam's artistic peak begun on their third LP, All Mod Cons and carried through on its follow-up, Setting Sons. This is considered by many fans and critics to be The Jam's best album; only All Mod Cons receives more claims thereto. Paul Weller considers this album to be The Jam's best work.

Side One:
  1. "Pretty Green"
  2. "Monday"
  3. "But I'm Different Now"
  4. "Set The House Ablaze"
  5. "Start!"
  6. "That's Entertainment"
Side Two:
  1. "Dream Time"
  2. "Man In The Corner Shop"
  3. "Music For The Last Couple" (Rick Buckler, Bruce Foxton, Paul Weller)
  4. "Boy About Town"
  5. "Scrape Away"
That's Entertainment:

Start:

Man in the corner shop:

Good to see The Jam picked. It took until the 5th round of the second draft. Too often over-looked.

Awards and Accolades

The nomination of "Falling Slowly" for the best original song Oscar was questioned because of the different versions previously released on The Cost and The Swell Season. The AMPAS music committee determined that, in the course of the film's protracted production, the composers had "played the song in some venues that were deemed inconsequential enough to not change the song’s eligibility". "Falling Slowly" won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The soundtrack was twice nominated for Grammy Awards, under Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media and, for "Falling Slowly", Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. It won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Music, and it was ranked at number two on the Entertainment Weekly 25 New Classic Soundtrack Albums list (1983–2008).

Charts Success

The soundtrack album reached #20 on the Irish Albums Chart in its first week, peaking at #15 a few weeks later.[citation needed] Following the Oscar win, the album reached the top of the chart, while "Falling Slowly" reached a new peak of #2.

In the U.S., it ranked as the #10 soundtrack on June 1. As of July 11, 2007, the album has sold 54,753 copies in the US. The album reached #27 on the Billboard 200 according to Allmusic. It also reached #2 on the Soundtracks Chart and #4 on the Independent Chart.
