I really believe that Harper had two plans.
Plan #1 - The Liberals fold and allow the bill to pass and their party is financially crippled in the foreseeable future due to their pitiful fund raising organization.
Plan #2 - The Liberals as well as the NDP and Bloc vote down the bill and another general election is called. Harper says to the voting public... "See what they did? Another election after we just had one a few weeks ago! Parliament, in its current state is disfunctional. I need a majority government in order to get anything done... particularly in the current tough econominc times!!!"
I don't think that Harper saw the possibility of a coalition at all. I bet it was a total surprise to him.... which of course changed everything.

From what I can gather, the conference call happened on November 29th. Since it was recorded by a Tory MP accidentally invited to the call, I'd say Harper probably found out pretty darn quick.

Harper had the fiscal update on November 27, which is when he proposed cancelling the funding for political parties.
... so I guess he didn't know about the coalition plans until after his fiscal update.

Hearing the Liberal MPs talk today, specifically Leblanc and McCallum, makes me think (not really a surprised I suppose) that this coalition is completely dead in the water. What a waste of about 500 pages on CP, lol.

Sad to see this thread die. It was a trip. Between this and the post your mug thread, I feel like I learned A LOT about my fellow CPers.

Edit: It was a good thread...the thing that I'm left with is that there are that many elected officials in this country on the "superior, culture of entitlement" Liberals who seriously backed such a useless, wasteful plan, strictly based on emotions/revenge/whatever, and did so on basically a snap decision over a week. And then to align with the NDP and the Seperatists? There were a majority of Liberals that thought that it was a good idea, and thought that it was a rational, well thought out decision? Incredible.
Well lets toss this in here.
May "embarrassed" to be a Canadian.
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/...ate-talks.html
Be "embarrassed" about the Kyoto accord, be embarassed about whatever...but in being a citizen of this country? This is a person that wants to be in the Senate or Cabinet?
I'm guessing she's not embarassed enough to be staying on a European junket with Canadian taxpayer money.

I'm embarrassed that Elizabeth May represents Canada. I'm embarrassed that there are far more capable woman and men out there that could actually do something with the Green Party and this loud mouthed rude power hungry idiot is the face of that party.
If she's so ashamed to be representing Canada, then maybe she should resign her position as the leader of a political party and move somewhere where she would be much happier.

She's embarrassed to be Canadian? I think a lot more Canadians are embarrassed that she is Canadian.
Why is it that about the only news organization in Canada covering this story is the CBC? I know, because Lizzy May is a Liberal, she sold out the Greenies to the Liberals and she is upset now that she could not buy her way into parliament and is even more upset at her prospects of not being appointed to the Senate.
Memo to CBC and the rest of the mainstream press, the Green Party did not win a single seat in the House of Commons and therefore do not represent the views of anyone. They're even less legitimate than the Bloc Quebecois. Canadians overwhelming rejected Ms. May and her ridiculous political views in the election, please stop pretending that anything she has to say matters.
In any case this country could use a few degrees of warming, have any of you checked your thermometers lately?

She was an American and became a Canadian citizen around 1980.
And your point about her being a Christian is?
