I recently got the rings of death and I'm preparing to send my broken x-box off, but I'm just wondering if I should hold onto the HD drive or send it along? I don't want to send it off if it wont come back with all my saved games.

Do not send your hard drive. Console only, and make sure there are no games in the tray. Also any custom faceplates need to be removed.
If/when you get the email there are instructions on exactly what to do/not to do.

I had bought a 360 from a guy here on CP and got the RROD a week later. I called Microsoft and luckily the console was unregistered. Even though it was purchased by the guy originally in 2006, the 3 year warranty begins on the date of registration apparantly. So now I've got a replacement console on the way and a brand new 3 year warranty. What is the average wait time to get it back?

^^^I think mine took a full 3 or 4 weeks. From what I hear it can really vary.
It is xmas time though so I'd imagine it'll take longer.

Well it happened to me too. Called the hotline, and despite it being an older version (no hdmi input) the guy said I'd be getting a new machine. Had a label emailed to me, except it's UPS. Is this a problem? Can I just drop it off at my nearest Canada post location regardless?

I just dropped mine off at the UPS store at Deerfoot Meadows, I doubt they would take it at Canada post but who knows. UPS was fast and pre-paid.

There is also a UPS store at Country Hills and deerfoot at the theatre/home depot etc.
I think there is one at the superstore on Country hills too by Sarcee.

So this is what pisses me off.
I had the red ring of death. Sent it in, 8 days later it comes back and it works fine. Two days after that last night, I turn it on to play some 09, unreadable disc errors on all of my discs. apparently there are only three problems with the xbox. I have now had two of them.
Funking piece of crap.
Now I have to send it in again.
