But New Democrat leader Jack Layton requested in a letter to television networks that all three opposition leaders get time on the microphone, saying the coalition is not yet official and the parties are still "distinct and functionally separate."

"We respectfully remind broadcasters that the proposed coalition is just that: a proposal to the Canadian people by two of Canada's political parties with the backing of a third," stated the letter from Layton's office.
No, Jack.

You don't get it both ways. You and your coup chose Dion to be your leader, so you get to sit there with and try to figure out what the hell he's saying just like the rest of us are forced to do.

...and I respectfully remind you that, at no time in its glorious history, has this country ever given a rat's ass what you have to say.

Government is cabinet.

Coalition government is cabinet made up of more than one party.

Bloc quebecois will have no cabinet members.

Bloc quebecois is not a part of the coalition government.

Bloc quebecois will support the coalition government on matters of confidence.

I don't know how much more clearly I can spell it out.

Because.....it is? If they aren't part of the coalition, why do they have an agreement in place to vote with them on all confidence matters? Liberals can downplay the involvement all they want, it's still there. They even have a pretty little document to prove it.

Again, no specifics from Layton.

Basically they're going to try to take government, do all of the work already done by the government in terms of getting requests from the province.

With public backlash, and its going to get bigger tomorrow after the dismal performance by the three leaders of the coalition if she doesn't prorouge, she's hopefully going to do the right thing and let Canadians decide.

You made it crystal clear. Without the Bloc's support, the Liberal/NDP coalition would be the second largest party, and at the mercy of the conservatives. They also would not have the support for the GG to even consider them as a viable alternative. How would a party of 114 seats have more confidence than one with 143?

Why would the Bloc be a signatory if they weren't a part of the coalition. Yes, not part of the "government", but part of the coalition.

And the coalition is unable to form an alternative to the current Government without paying off the Bloc to announce a vote of non-confidence, and has payed off the Bloc to keep from switching sides to support the Conservatives if this whole thing was reversed.

Enough of the technicalities.. This is WRONG for Canada.

Wow..Dion that was a terrible speech.

When does the GG have to give her response to Harper b/c the sooner the uncertainty around this circus is over the better

That being said..the longer this goes on, the more crazy this coalition looks.

You know, that's an interesting question, and the likely answer is that she will have to give her answer before the house reconvenes on Monday with the confidence motion. I would expect the request for tomorrow, and the answer within two days.

Was it just me or did it look like Dion recorded his speech on his webcam?

Behind the scenes, the NDP has to be furious at the incompetence of the Liberals. The person that put the hot air balloon book behind Dion has to be commended for destroying his leader.

"Excuse me Mr Dion, but the amateur porn studio from down the street needs their camcorder back by 6:30"

Still laughing at the hot air book.

Watching on the CBC (mistake #1), Mansbridge and Boag complaining that Harper didn't way anything new, and was shorter then anticipated and wagging their fingers at him for implying the seperatists were part of it. Both wearing red ties by the way.

As it turns out, a great move by Harper. He doesn't need to say anymore then he did, or has in the parliment, his position is clear and simple. He wanted to address the Canadian people who don't watch/haven't seen all the soundbites from the last 3 sessions of parliment, and lay that out in one contiguous statement. He doesn't need to discuss the technicalites of what may happen in the next days, and also talked in the future sense, mentoned his plans that are in motion, and the budget on Jan 27 etc...not talking in past tense. He talks about the plans, and the pitfalls of letting a coalition that includes seperatists.

Then Dion, who even the red CBC started complaining about (imagine the outroar if they cut Dion off at 5:30, as ALL parties had agreed on?) not getting the tape in time. I'm speculating, but I bet that the Liberals scrambled to get Dion to say something different, because Dion spoke as if Harper had laid out the steps he was taking in talking to the GG tomorrow and that all this was a forgone conclusion....again, the Liberals putting the cart before the horse, and Dion talking about all that stuff that Harper was "going" to be doing porbably confused the casual viewer, because Harper never mad any mention of that. But I bet the time was too tight and couldn't get another response out in time so they went with the response that was done.

Anyone notice the book on the top left above Dion, titled "Hot Air". You can't write that any better.

Besides the embarassing lateness of the Liberal communications team (mentioned by the CBC journallist on, who followed the Liberal on the campaign trail as a common occurance), and Dion babbling on and on about things, and directly responding to moves Harper hasn't made yet, sure likely didn't make any more people confident of his abilities to lead the country, if even for 4 months.

Even fencesitters, you think the Coalition has the job to make it a clear case why they should form such a union to change the governing body, no matter if it includes seperatists or not...they hardly did that. Harper's position is clear...a lot clearer then a guy who his own party doesn't want and failed the Liberal party in the election, make a bunch of promises and babble on and on in different directions.

Bottom line, the average viewer was looking for a clear reason why Dion whould suddenly lead this country. I don't think this tonight convinced anyone that his organizational skills (rather his party's) the coalition's plan, or he personally as leader, would be a clear improvement over Harper. Toss in the Bloc element to that coalition and I don't think the coalition did itself any favours tonight.

Does the GG take the leadership problems with the Liberals into play when she makes her decision?

I almost thinks she has to. The Liberals are plainly a party without their sh%t together and to me are incapable of doing anything right.

I think she has to weigh that too.

My gut says there's no way she risks the backlash at her and her position by appointing an unelected coalition with an admitted lame duck leader, and she sends it to the polls, where it belongs.
