They are all politicians. I'm loving how everyone is outraged by this 'coup'.
While I do agree, I was posting that to illustrate that the comparison to Harper's move in 2004 is false. He never suggested a coalition but rather a true pragamatic approach to dealing with things on an issue by issue basis.

Logically, the Libs would be in power because the NDP and Bloc are too small to do anything on their own. Logically, the bloc and NDP would expect Liberal support because they'd be getting into power. There was no need and no evidence that the Liberals were involved in those early plans. To suggest they were is nothing more then a weak conspiracy theory. There is plenty of "logical" explantions as to why the Bloc and NDP would have those talks without the Libs.

You know this is just an economic update, not the actual budget right? Besides, at this point the other parties are all to busy patting themselves on the back for circumventing the electoral process to talk to the conservatives. Why change the plan when no one is showing interest in getting their two cents in?

If they are too small to do anything on their own, why did they have a plan in place? Wouldn't need it.

And you do understand the whole reason for this coalition is the refusal to discuss this economic update?

There is no circumvention of the electoral process. This is a parliamentary democracy.

Come on now, this isn't that hard.
They could make the plan with the hope they'd be able to get Liberal support, for obvious reasons like they'd offer them the Government, PM and most of the key positions.
The key difference is them making a plan that would lure the Libs in, not making a plan with the Libs.

It seems in general, that the Conservatives have given in to all the questions brought up by the opposition:

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/...on-period.html

From the article:

The Tories have since backtracked on the most divisive issues, dropping plans to cut the public funding political parties receive on a per-vote basis and moving the budget up to late January, with suggestions it will include an economic stimulus package.

There is no point to the coalition anymore, no?

It was already in the works before that ever had the chance to happen. Canada voted for a conservative minority. Before it had a chance to do anything, the liberals and NDP decided to band together and overthrow that. That isn't listening to what the voters have to say.

Stelmach said he hoped cooler heads would prevail in the days to come, but did not rule out working with the coalition government.
Not the sort of response I was looking for really. I was hoping he offer them the business end of a pitchfork, not an olive branch.

And the one provision they most opposed to....taxpayers funding their party being taken away...was removed.

The rest of it they don't like...i get it...but what is the compromise on their side? To pull a coup. Good stuff.

Eh, I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. No proof either way, but logic (and liberal history) lead me to believe the worst in them. Maybe it isn't fair of me, but until they prove themselves to be after the best interest of canadians instead of power for themselves, I see no reason to believe them.

I've always thought that as an economic Stimulus that the Canadian Government should buy the Ford assembly plants in Ontario with a view towards building a Canadian made truck for local sales and export. the name would need to combine the elements of this unique Canadian product with the probable partnership of the Ford Motor Company who could provide the expertise and knowledge required to build and market this vehicle.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the 2009 CanaFord.

Well they didn't officially oppose this but we both know that was why this all happened.

I think at this state, the Conservatives have backpedaled enough to not justify this coalition anymore. The Liberals could walk away from this looking very good... Delay any action until January now that the Conservatives have talked about a potential stimulus package.

Damn, I dont watch the news over the weekend and instead concentrate on the Flames roasting the nucks and some NFL football and our country spirals downward.

I dont have alot to say until it actually happens. Personally I say let the coalition have their chance. If it works, great for them, if it doesnt it will blow up in there face and the Cons will get their majority.
