I don't remember ps2's being hard to find beyond that first Christmas. It is getting peculiar that it would be this hot going into it's third Christmas while selling in a very similar way to the ps2 a few years ago.

While not sitting in the closet my room mates Wii has been turned on once in the last 6 months...and that was only to update it so the blue light stopped flashing...

I've turned mine on a few times the last few months, but it was to play old school NES and SNES games. I dunno, the novelty is getting kind of outdated for me as well. Call me tradiitional, but I think I like playing games by pressing buttons rather than waving my arms around.

I'm pretty sure they keep the illusion of a shortage going as a bit of a marketing ploy to keep up a certain 'mystique' of the product. It's pretty clever, actually.

Everybody says there is some kind of Wii conspiracy but I see them in stores all the time. It's just one of those things that you won't find if you specifically go out and look for one, but you'll come across incidentally.
That said, there still is a serious dearth of good games and an abundance of crap. Did Nintendo fail to put a good lock chip on it or something? Because I am seeing so much generic crap software for Wii in discount bins. It's like crappy Atari games and 1983 all over again.

As with any console launch, I gave them the benefit of the doubt in thinking demand > supply for the first six months. After that timeframe (Nov 2006 - Jun 2007 in Nintendo's case), any company should be able to meet consumer demands. You know, assuming they *want* to meet consumer demands.

it has nothing to do with poor marketing, they are improving their own margins, plain and simple.
The market in California is larger than that of all of Canada. Why would Nintendo send over boats, planes and trucks of Wii's to Canada (who has a terrible transport infrastructure system especially compared to that of the US) when they can send those same planes, trains and trucks to California, get them distributed and sold faster for less cost to them. It is margins. They can sell more to Californians with less cost....smart marketing from a company standpoint.
you can find more Wii's in Montana than Canada as well. Take a drive down to Kalispell.

I believe they are playing the market as if they have a monopoly on their segment. While I think they are in competition with Sony and Microsoft, they are not behaving like they are in competition. PS3 and xBox360 have had a number of rounds of price cuts. I don't think Wii has dropped in price yet.
At Bestbuy.ca right now, the comparative prices are:
Wii 279.99
PS3 (80 GB Hard Drive) 399.99
XBox 360
(Arcade - no Hard Drive) 199.99,
(Pro - 20 GB) 269.99
(Pro - 60 GB) 299.99
(Elite - 120 GB + other stuff) 399.99
So it isn't that Wii is inexpensive compared to the other 2 units anymore. But it seems that Wii can maintain these prices and still sell out. As long as there isn't excess inventory building up they don't need to drop prices.

Maybe Sony and MS can form a coalition.. hehe.
Not sure why there is all this nintendo bashing. For the past 6 months you could find wii's every where in Calgary. Why wait until 4 weeks before xmas to try and find one.
