I guess I really never thought of Youtube as something that needed HD. In fact given how grainy some of the videos are, will going to HD really make them better?

For 98% of videos it won't matter.
But for the content Youtube wants to start providing and earning money off of, it means a lot.
Youtube has also, with this update, come up with a way to embed commercials within videos. A spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down.
