And in the process, thousands of media players suddenly cannot be used to view Youtube content. (Including the Archos players.)

I guess I really never thought of Youtube as something that needed HD. In fact given how grainy some of the videos are, will going to HD really make them better?

Youtube gives you HD for your birthday and you're going to be ungrateful about it? I guess I'll go return what I got you then!

LOL- no; they started making the switch a few weeks ago. Right about the time I bought the web browser plugin for my Archos.

For 98% of videos it won't matter.

But for the content Youtube wants to start providing and earning money off of, it means a lot.

Youtube has also, with this update, come up with a way to embed commercials within videos. A spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down.

From what I've been reading; as well as trying for myself- it's a lot more than 2%. It would appear that Youtube is moving towards using one codec for all videos; HD or not.

I hadn't dug into it that far, just a few news item that HD was available and commercials could be embedded on the fly.

If it is a whole new codec I wonder how long for portable media players to release a firmware flash.
