Default Question/Idea regarding skill

Skill had it's flaws, but it's something I'd love to see returned. It was a great feature to the board.

Would having a new set of "Skill mods" help any?

Let the regular group of moderators handle the moderating of the board, and let a new group of posters handle skill rating.

Add a new button to posts where you can choose to report a positive or negative rating, instead of using the report feature for skill.

Just an idea..

I've noticed an extreme jump in Kool-Aid ridden posts since skill was gone.

As a former blue-square myself who managed to have it changed, its amazing how differently people respond to your posts once its removed. Its also amazing how one bad post can correct your style enough to make sure that subsequent posts are the kind that add to the board.

I like the even playing field we have now. I vote no on skill points coming back. I especially vote no on a special group of skill point annointers.

I agree with this. The community by and large are aware who the solid posters are... bad posters normally diminish their contributions and sit back and read more after they've been called out a few times by members which is a good thing I think... and then return later knowing their trolling, etc. isn't really cared for on this site.

The Thanks feature is actually growing on me and I think it's a suitable replacement for the old skill points format, and in fact IMO is better if people are looking for recognition since the specific post is noted.

I agree, I am against skill in it's old form, or with any special chosen ones giving it out.

Maybe we should have a disagree or an "un-thanks" button as well? (maybe custom buttons called "PTS" for thanks and "PIM" for no-thanks) and then after you get a certain number of thanks (say 5 or 10) then you get a skill point. Of course that works in the negative too.

Not sure if that is even possible, or probable, since I am not really a website builder, but if it's easy we could try it for a few weeks and see?

Unfortunately there's no unthanks functionality built in, so there'd be coding involved.. probably not too difficult but someone has to take the time to do it and unfortunately I just don't have any extra at the moment.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

A variation of the Youtube: thumbs up or thumbs down would be the best bet I think. Each post could be given a thumbs up or down, and cumulatively each poster would have a total rating of all thier posts of x +/-. This rating could be displayed below each posters Exp.

This way you keep the "skill" without the mods having to worry about it.

The potential for abuse with the system you are mentioning is higher though.

If poster X doesn't like poster Y, they could just give a negative vote to every single one of their posts, for example.

REDVAN's example of a system where you need a certain number of +'s or -'s before you skill points fluctuate might work well. That way, if two posters don't like each other, and are heavily biased, the impact would be minimal.

Don't forget that right now thanks is being used for non-skill purposes like voting in the photo challenge threads. Some possibility for artificial influence on 'skill' as a result.

I originally missed my red squares, but this new system is growing on me. I like the lawlessness involved. No more dreading the ham-handed fist of the law when you make that insult or vulgar joke, its like letting the inmates run the asylum. Its good times.

What I do miss is some of the feedback you used to get that came with the skill points. The freedom may just be a little too much at the moment, and sometimes getting a message to 'cool it down,' or even just a 'very good post' from a faceless mod might alleviate things somewhat.

In the meantime, I'm going to cause some havoc...I didnt think that off-the-cuff remark about the crazy campus pro-lifers would snowball that far...

Yeah we've been talking about trying to be a little more proactive in giving feedback in threads, rather than just handing out an infraction, posting in-thread as well to point things out.

Well, I was referring to some of the feedback you used to get privately. Sometimes what you want to tell someone is not something you want to do publicly, or even in the thread because it can derail.

BTW, can we also uncensor the word: Basterd (with appropriate spelling)? Its one of my favorites and misspelling it to get around the filter just saps some of the magic...

Can you have it so that skill only appears in the Hockey forums?
