Default WordPress - "Famous 5 Minute Install"

Maybe if you have a degree in computer programming. I think it should be the "Famous Makes-Me-Want-To-Throw-My-Computer-Off-A-Bridge Install."

Does anyone have any experience using this program? I am being told it's the best way to go for creating a blog/podcast, but between SQL, FileZilla, .php files, and plenty of other computer language/programs I know nothing about, I am about ready to give up and just hire somebody to do all this. With money I don't have, lol.

Specifically, I think I have uploaded everything to my web host, but I can't seem to open the install.php page to start the installation. If anyone can direct me where I can get some really dumbed-down tech advice, because everything I am reading is over my head, I would be forever grateful. THX

What do you see when you try to navigate to the install.php? Page not found?

Who is your host? Most shared hosting companies usually have a feature where you can install wordpress without having to do any uploading.

http://wordpress.com/

You can also go there and get a wordpress blog without having to host it yourself. The free one does have some limits, but should be ok to start with unless you want your own domain or expect to grow really fast.

Yeah, I already have my own domain and want to incorporate some of the more advanced features eventually, so it was recommended to me to not use the free one and go with the .org version instead.

Thanks for replying btw!

My web host does not have an auto-install option for WP, wish it did. I am a wreck right now, need to have a couple beers.

Anyways, I finally figured it out I thought, and got it installed. The problem I'm having now is that when I go to login to the admin panel, I get this:

Not Found
The requested URL /wp-login.php was not found on this server.

Someone on another board is telling me this:

Quote:
the link to your blog is pointing back to the root of your domain -- where wordpress isnt installed (first clue)

your blog looks like its here:

white page (second clue)

check your error log to figure out whats up with the white page.

check what your site url and home url values are. They dont look right to me, given where the link is going. Thats the source of the "not found" issue.

Only problem is I don't have any idea what he's talking about or any clue where to go from here!

Don't spend too much time on me photon, I am probably a lost cause and will have to recruit somebody local to give me a tutorial and get this up and running for me! But if you have any quick info, let 'er rip. Cheers.

When you uploaded the files, did you upload them to the bottom part of your domain (different hosts show this differently, some when you ftp in show your domain root in a /www or /html directory, some put you right in your root) or did you put them in a subdirectory?

If you put them in a subdirectory, then in the wordpress install you have to give the full URL to it.

So say your domain is whatever.com and you uploaded it to a directory like, in the install you'd specify http://whatever.com/like as the location of your blog. Sounds like this is what's happening.

Not sure how to fix that one besides running the install again (short of either editing the config file or the database, not sure where WP stores that info).

Thanks photon. That's the direction I decided to go- try the install over again. I'm sure I had a directory/sub-directory issue. Will update this thread once I figure it out.

Edit - Yup, re-install worked. I think I messed around with some kind of url settings before. Miraculously, I figured out how to clear the info from the database tables in my SQL server, or something like that, all by myself. Big ups to me. Time to relax now!

long time user and lover of wordpress here. have it installed on my own webserver and a hosted one as well. the 5 minute install does assume you are familiar with php, mysql, and your hosting setup. so it can be daunting for a total noob. but as far as installing things, it can be a lot easier than other php/mysql apps.

if you ever have questions, i would be more than happy to help.

Just wait till you try to get a Drupal or Joomla installation up and running, then you'll appreciate Wordpress' 5 minute install

Those two almost require a moderate degree of server administration knowledge.
