That's crime, as in any crime -- and that's what has the teeth of this particular law jutting out like the fangs of a sabre-tooth tiger

crazy that you coud have a friends car seized and sold if caught driving drunk in it.

So you could eventually be found innocent, but your property would still have been auctioned? I think that is BS.

Interesting... I get the point, but I don't really see why seizure of a car used in drunk driving has anything to do with the actual crime. However, if it means a bigger deterrent against drunk driving, I'm all for it.

Whoa, without a conviction is outright authoritarian. This comes with a sort of built in assumption that everything belongs to the State. Don't like it at all.

Good idea in principle, but there's some very dangerous implications. What happens if someone is charged and found innocent? Does the government say, "oops, sorry", or are they liable to pay back the loss, plus damages?
What happened to innocent until proven guilty? I could see seizure upon a decision or plea of guilty... but to be able to do it without a conviction is very disconcerting and very authoritarian.

It'll be interesting to see how this gets handled.I'd imagine that it'll be used more for cases of drug and gang related crime (I didn't read this article, but I read one in the paper this morning and that's what they said as well) and not so much for things like drunk driving unless it is a repeat offender or something like that.

On a side note, isn't there already a law that says that the police can seize your car if you're using it to troll for hookers?
